cable quality

Post by andyaber » Mon Jun 03, 2013 4:51 pm

Putting bars on the bike so went shopping the other day for tdm850 throttle and clutch cables.

Went to a big mail order place and asked if they did different qualities.

No just one type.

Are they oem type or cheapies I asked.

Cheapies I was told and if I want the best then buy Yamaha ones.

I was going to ring Venhill or Wemoto.

Any comments on quality etc much appreciated.

Cheers, Andy.

Venhill will want an arm and a leg, think £70 for a couple of normal (i.e. nylon lined, not teflon) throttle cables. Have you checked ebay for NOS originals?

Erm actually NO:

And, they`re ALL PTFE lined too:

Venhill`s kit is quality, used them since the 1970`s, wouldn`t use anyone else either.

I have used Venhill stuff, it is very good, much cheaper than OE stuff and you can make it any size you like. I made a set of custom cables up for my FCRs and used Venhill components to repair my original throttle cable worked a treat

Alright then, I retract my Venhill-based insults. I was going by a quote given to me by a local dealership who are a recognised Venhill stockist, I wanted a pair of throttle cables for a Honda CBX250RS as they don't exist. I was told it'd be around £70 after sending my originals off, them making up some replicas and then sending them back.

In the end David Silver got some NOS cables in for about £12 each..

Phoned Fowlers at Bristol
Clutch cable £21.50
Throttle cable £35.38
both plus vat and back order so 3-4 days from yamaha.

Phoned Venhill, not kept as std but will make them using teflon & stainless stuff
Clutch cable £42
Throttle cable £54
both plus vat

Wemoto have wildly varying prices from website to ebay so i'll phone them tomorrow maybe.

I have been looking for a speedo cable for mine. My speedo cable is 119 cm long as the the front is raised quite abit. I contacted a company in Nottingham called Cable Tec and they have made me one and sent it to me in less 48 hrs and it only cost £15!!!
