Hi,

...is always sort of a special moment, especially when the bike has an un-known history, with evidence of neglect.

Oil was a tad below minimum, after 5 min. of idling. I guess in winter that is not enough for a good reading, oil temp 30 degs centgrade?

- ...but out of the reservoir 2.2 litres of oil!
- out of oil filter 0.1 liter
- out of engine 0.9 liter. Never did this measuring before, it looks rather much to me, but again: the oil was lukewarm, and more oil will cling everywhere.

- oil was as black as one would expect from a normal diesel car oil change 2 times a year, with 350.000 kms on the clock.

And dismanlted the oil filter: routine for me with new acquired and/or rattling engines:



..in reality it looks more dramatic.
IMHO could be A LOT better, but it doesnt look at imminent danger.
No aluminum I guess, and no hues and alu reflections in the oil itself.
Camchain, and the rest?? The engine makes no strange noises.

My son, the owner and user of the bike, had already 6 valves on his purchasing list, and adds now piston rings.
...but of course one should ride the bike for some 1000-s of kilometers...after freeing up the brakes.

And check the valves, but that is supposed to be fun. in the spring sun....

They do hold rather a lot of oil, but it's no bad thing (aside from the cost of the stuff) because they can burn it too.

What is the brown stuff in the filter?

Metal flakes in old oil, most of them non-magnetic.

Looks like you're in the ballpark, 3.9 litres or 4.2 with a filter change is what the manual states.

Have you thought about doing an oil flush with the correct oil cleaner?

• This is one of my "must do" thing when getting a new bike,
  dump the oil then do an engine oil flush
  change the old filter after the flush
  replace the oil with a cheeper straight non-modified engine oil (doesn't matter what weight) I usually go for what ever is on sale
  replace the filter
  run the engine up to temp and let idle for 10min (or a quick ride) and then dump that oil,
  replace the filter,
  finally refill with your preferred oil.
  I am always amazed as to how much crud comes out with the flush and the cheeper oil dirties really quickly

This seems like overkill and expensive but it give me a starting point with the oil and filters and the oil flush that i use can be used at least 20 times ($45), the two filters work out to be $12 and the wasted (second flush) oil is used in the car So one filter is wasted…..

Agree with Rod. I did a flush three oil changes back and with Liqui Moly Motorcycle flush and had a fair bit of liquid sludge come out. Would strongly recommend doing a flush now and then every 5 oil changes thereafter.
