I know there are some visual cues that help pick a grey import like brembo brakes, white clocks, paint scheme colours etc but is it possible to pick a grey import purely on the engine or frame number?

Re: Grey Imports - engine and frame codes
On the frames I think that I have sussed the answer. Should have thought first and asked later
J - Japan - country of manufacture
Y - Yamaha - manufacturer
A - Motorcycle
The next three letters is part of the answer. 4XG is an Aussie bike. 4UN is European and 4NX Japanese so I assume all grey imports will be 4NX. Is this correct?
No idea on engines.

Correct
Biggest visual clue is that Japanese motors tend to be black (and have no engine number as such)
