The sticker on my bike reads 4XG4-010, and the frame number is JYA4XGT04XA00261.

I have the original books, and this bike was sold new by Inskip Motorcycles in Newcastle.

The dealership that sold the Millenium TRX850 was Bikebiz in Parramatta NSW.

These guys also built a special that they used on the track.

There is a article about this bike somewhere on this forum.

I would be very interested to find out when the last bikes came into OZ.

I've never seen one with a later compliance than mine.

I will try to get my son to help me post some pictures of the sticker and compliance plate on here in the next few days. :) :) :)

My frame or VIN number reads JYA4XGT02TA00805 for a 10/96 build date. On the compliance plate the "JYA4XGT0" section is etched into the original graphic and the unique stamping starts with "2TA00805" and with your bike being a 05/01 build date I think its safe to assume that the "JYA4XGT0" common to our two bikes means "TRX850 built for Yamaha Australia in Japan" I had a look at my engine # "4XG-000716" and the code 4XG crops up in both the VIN and the little sticker under the seat so my guess is that 4XG stands for Oz spec TRX850 drivetrain so the J stands for made in Japan, the YA means built for Yamaha Oz, the 4XG is the engine and the T0 is TRX chassis type

According to the Hynes manual both the frame & engine numbers started @ 00101, why? I dunno.

Now to stick my neck out I will guess that as Yamaha builds bikes in batches on common production lines then my bike "2TA00805" was the 704th TRX frame built that Japanese financial year, built in the year "T" and it is fitted with the 615th TRX850 engine built that same financial year. By this logic Kenmores TRX "4XA00261" that we know was built in 05/01 is the 160th built in year X

So here is my theory. The Japanese financial year runs from the 1st of April to the following 31st March. My bike built in Oct 1996 is code T and we know the TRX was released in Japan in 1995 so that would be code S

Thus the VIN codes would run
01/04/95 to 31/03/06 code S,
01/04/96 to 31/03/97 code T
01/04/97 to 31/03/98 code U
01/04/98 to 31/03/99 code V
01/04/99 to 31/03/00 code W
01/04/00 to 31/03/01 code X

And Kenmores bike, assembled in May 01, with a frame build no later than March 01 is the youngest I have heard of. Whats your engine number by the way?

The only way for us to see if this holds water is if you lot spray us with complete frame numbers so we can compare.... fun innit?

Very interesting stuff.

The engine number on my bike is 4XG002664.

Did you know that cars and bikes are only complied in OZ once the importer pays the duty to the government?

I work in the automotive industry , and its not unusual to see imported cars with a build date many months prior to the compliance date.
In some cases it can be years apart.

I don't think that motor bikes have build plates like cars. They only have compliance plates that i am aware of.

It would be good if more people supply their chassis numbers so that you can test your theory. :) :) :) :)

So your engine is 2664-716 units later than mine... 1948 engines. 389 per year for 5 years seems a lot of TRX sold for OZ

The compliance plate is attached at the factory and its only function is to formally list compliance to the ADR's in force at the time of construction (hence the build date). This is of great importance if you are defending a noise ticket in NSW amongst other things. I was booked for failing a stat noise test on the old road in Sydney but succesfully defended the ticket in court as the cuntstable booked me for failing the static noise test at the current level yet my bike had stock mufflers and was built to comply with the ADR's current at the time of construction.

Compliance plates have no function in import duty regulation. Duty is payed by the importer upon customs release. Imagine if Toyota brought a boatload of Corollas in a roll-on roll-off ship, drove them onto the docks, paid the duty and then a couple of blokes with a box of plates, a rivet gun and a set of punches added compliance plates one car at a time as they get rolled onto the car carriers and sent to the dealers? It would take weeks to clear the docks. I have seen bikes unpacked from the packing crate with the plate attached, and I have seen the plates added to locally produced cars on the production line. I am also aware of low volume importers adding plates locally but anything imported on a big scale the plates are put on during construction.

99 model blue vin# JYA4XGTO0XA002543 engine number 4XG-002431
When i bought this bike the engine had a severe knock/big end
I got another motor from the wrecker wich is the above number but the old motor was 4XG-002433 only 2 digits difference and the track bike I sold to kev is as above 4XG-002428 So I've owned 3 motors with only a few digits difference. how freaky is that!!!!

If I remember this right, the Japanese imports don't have a serial number on the engine. fairly sure either Ekoja or Slow Codger has said this before.

If you need part numbers use the parts book, most of the 4UN is the same as the 4NX.

:? The sticker reads 3xv 24877 00, the frame/chassis number is 4nx-000216. No engine number, just 4nx. It is a Japanese import from 1995.

Work that one out.
