Clearances was a good recco. However, this sounds to me like yet another possible case of the "dreaded" emulsion tube wear. (Other forum users, please look away now to avoid falling into a dead sleep or experiencing repeated post frenzy :) )

It's exactly what my TRX did - lost power and then wouldn't start as the plugs were being fouled. Replace plugs and it's fine, until they foul again and the bike won't start. Basically, the stock emulsion tubes / needle jets get worn oval by the needles due to the carbs being a **** design, so the bike overfuels and buggers its plugs. Do a search and you will get all the info. Cure is simply pulling the carbs and replacing the needle jets.

Would have thought a Yam dealer would know about this - my local dealer was well aware of it, and TRXs aren't very common bikes.

YZF750's deal with the same problem, as they have the same carbs!
Those are somewhat more common, so, the dealer should have known. [-X

Yes, but remember in modern Sportsbike Britain, it is a requirement to throw away your bike after 1 year and buy the latest hypersports bike. Never mind if you don't know how to ride it, just buy more tuning parts... ;) #-o  And also no riding your bike other than on sunny Sunday mornings. For 1 hour. In summer.

See, aren't you glad you're in the Netherlands?

Haha @ IDL1975 :D Well, actually it's pretty much the same here.
Last weekend the weather was nice - 3 bikers and a moped driver died. All were unilateral (*) accidents.
My boss reads it in the paper and this morning I got to work (with my shiny TRX) and I have to explain all that crap.
I'm employed in traffic consultancy, so my boss knows the statistics very well.
I hate that (the accidents, not my boss :o  ).

(*) is that word correct? It comes from the dictionary. They crashed on their own, that's what I want to say.

Sorry djttrx850, i'm capturing a topic again.

Strictly speaking that has the right meaning, but you'd probably be better saying "single vehicle accidents" or "accidents where no-one else was involved".

English lesson over ... get back on topic

Unilateral makes sense and is perfectly good English, but the usual "jargon" for that in the UK is "single vehicle accidents", which is what the UK traffic statistic people and the police call them, IIRC. I'm sure you read about them in Bike magazine - most bike accidents outside of cities here are single vehicle and due to the biker, whereas most bike accidents in cities are due to car drivers.

Personally, I don't blame the fair-weather bikers alone for those statistics, but they definitely don't help much.

But here we have fair-weather cyclists as well - these guys dress up in lycra and ride 10 minutes to the local coffee shop every Sunday, where they eat breakfast and sip coffee, then go home 3 hours later. Whereas I am told Dutch people all have those "safety bicycles" made of wrought iron girders and ride them everywhere. 2-1 to the Netherlands then! :D

Um, yes, back on topic...have them check those emulsion tubes! :)

:? Its your emulsion tubes, change the plugs and it will start, ride it for half an hour (No town riding) let it cool down then try and start it again. It wont!!

Single vehicle (*)RTC (road traffic collision)

* = Damage only, slight injury, (bumps and bruises), serious injury, (broken bones or lots of the red stuff) or fatal!

Now all of you guys (and a girl to be more accurate) got distracted by the tiny letters... That was not the message, you know... #-o

Anyway... Have you changed your emulsion tubes in the meantime? :P

Nope, the bike is still at the garage. I am supposed to find out today what is happening with it. Alledgedly they were going to change some rudder somethingorother in the vaccum tank or so say say.

A rudder?

Vacuum tank?

I thought I knew my bike quite well but never noticed the existence of these important (?) parts.

I KNEW there was something strange about your bike. Where's your rudder and vacuum tank?

I suspect maybe they meant the carb diaphragms and that was a reference to the vacuum operation of the CV carbs.

Don't worry OP, TRXs really aren't unreliable at all. As long as you remember to check the oil that is. I really think, assuming you're getting good spark on new plugs, all they need to do is chuck in some new emulsion tubes. It's entirely normal for them to be comprehensively rodgered by 19,000 miles.

Oh yeah, they aren't RTAs any more as that would imply they are accidental.

But what if you don't collide with anything, you just fall off your bike at a traffic light (I've seen it happen folks)? There must be a separate form for that surely.

Ok I meant rubber smart allecks!

The sales guy has just rang to tell me that it is getting fixed and that he is getting the carbs taken apart serviced and re-balanced. He has alledgedly told the mechanics that not matter what the cost the bike has to be fixed by the weekend. Altogether good news really.

It will be cool to see how this one plays out now.

Excellent that they are at least doing their best for you. You did mention the emulsion tubes to them didn't you? Just because if they replace the plugs and give the carbs a clean and it starts, they might give it back to you only to find, 50 miles later... #-o
