If the machine is in gear , the load to move the sprocket nut will transfer to the gears inside...yes..?
So have someone sit on the bike while in neautral WITH the chain in place and with the rear brake on, use a strong bar to shift the nut counter clockwise..
the chain and the rear brake act as the counter force.....no way id put her in gear.

rjen wrote:While we're on the topic I've always wondered about this.... When tightening or loosening the front sprocket nut you're all saying it's OK to have the bike in gear and also use the chain to stop the front output shaft rotating. Won't you stretch the chain or damage the gearbox if you do it this way!?!
Cheers,
Rjen.
Like I've said previously - why use the rear brake harder than it should be used - put a bar between the wheel spokes and the swingarm (with a cloth around it). It doesn't need to be in gear - nor does it matter - you're stopping the wheel from turning, not loading up the gearbox :?
How much torque does it take to pop a wheelie - a helluva lot more than a socket and bar
