Try finding one in australia  I think I got the last one in Victoria...

If your valve clearances are tight, you can get some wear on the cam journals, there's a few threads about it on here, might be time to check the valves...

From your description, i would have guessed big end problems as well, have heard exactly the same sound in real life, and got a description from another like yours, both found finally out thay had shot crank or main bearings.

hey guys, well im picking it up from the bike shop on thursday, from talking to mates of mine and my dad who have good mechanical knowledge they all agree that it may be the valves,if it was big end then compression test would have been off, it would produce the sound from idle and it would have developed over time.

Im going to take it via a yamaha dealer/workshop before i take it home so they can have a listen, may have come across it before, will take it to them when i have the funds to get it fixed.

Will keep u posted as to what it ends up being!

Not that i want to spread salt, but...

How would a big end failure show up in compression test?

A Swedish guy had exactly the same experince, fairly quite at idle, and increasing sound as revs went up. When he opened up the engine, he found out that the flywheel side main bearing was shot, and had rotated in the block.

I heard IRL an engine that "died" on a track day. It came "suddenly"... That was a big-end, and again, it was fairly quite at idle, started knocking from 3000 rpms.

Weird though that there was no metal in the oil, so maybe you're lucky. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it is something cheap ;) Defining/describing noise over the internet is not easy. Knocking is different from ticking/pinging, but how do you describe knocking, and how do i interprete it?

i/ve had my trix for 10 years and from 16000 to now it has always been a ticker over 3000
in 2001 my mech spoke to the head yam tech in qld (japanese fellow) and could not work out any grief to remedy.
10 2001 cam chain cool at 16000k's, valves at 16000k's cool. still tick tick tick.
recently done clearances (now 2010 at 29000k's) and have found tight inlets, perhaps tight earlier but not diagnosed??
left cyl centre inlet now hammered because of no clearances.
all inlets tight or closed.
do the clearances and watch your idle. tight inlets will give an unruly idle and then shut you down.
cheers fung

there a big difference in sound between a rattling cam chain / valves (mine makes a feck load of noise) and shot bearings.

I bought a bike with a completely shot big end - was near silent at tickover but was obvious when revved.

Mate, Have a look at the little ends for wear as they are a sure cause of top end rattle. Regards Killer. :D :D :D :D

Hello I had a similar problem with my fzr 400 race bike. It turned out to be the camchain tensioner was unloading at higher revs. When the engine was switched off the tensioner would push itself back out again. This was noticed when i had the cambox off and I turned the engine over manually to check the timing I heard a click and noticed the timing chain jump. I replaced tensioner and prolem was solved. I hope this is some help to you. Regards Paul.

Update,

well finally found out what was wrong with it and unfortunately it is bad news-turns out it is the bottom end-crank is gone. Bike shop i took it to didnt have a clue-just repaired the timing chain that was worn. Taken since April to find out the problem and really missed the beast over the summer.

Just not sure what to do now-obviously going to cost best part of a grand or more to sort engine out unless anyone has any ideas. My other choice is to buy another TRX and play around with the parts off both bikes to make into a pucker bike. I love the TRX as a bike, so full of character that you just cant dind on anything else in this price range!

Will keep you guys posted on what I end up doing!
