TRX wont start

You guys have been a total wealth of information. I am due to ge the bike before the weekend and if anyhting goes wrong with it I shall print out this thread and give it to the mechanic.

In the end though he is supposed to be a professional and I am sure that he knows what he is doing. From what I understand he has practically given my bike a full servicing that might have cost a tidy fortune were I to pay for it. They have so far changed the oil and air filters, changed the engine oil, changed the spark plugs and battery, changed the whatyoumecallit rubber thing and now given the carbs a thoruigh going over and balancing.

Now I dont know what you guys think but so far this guy has performed above and beyond what I had heard about M&S motorcycles. They have been very helpful and polite at every turn. They havent been able to do enough for me. I havent had to chase them up, he has kept me in the puicture at every turn. I cannot recommend them enough.

Idl, off topic but its still a single vehicle rtc, you or your machine collide with the tarmac, It would only be recordable were you to hurt yourself and find that a passerby has called the ambulance and police ( possibly to recover your bike ). If no one sees it then your not going to be telling your mates now are you??

I reckon this is the last post about this subject. I went to pick the bike up and it wouldnt start. Nothing, just the same sound it was making at the start.
He didnt even wait for me to ask for my money back, he just offered it up straight away. He alos said that his mechanic was going to be for the high jump for messing this up and I simply replied that this is a 13 year old bike and should be a heck of a lot easier to work on than an R1. Obviously not.
You would have thought that working on a bike as simple as this would be easy. Especially for a "qulaified mechanic"
Well the message is clear. If you want to buy a bike and get customer satisfaction then go to M&S Motorcycles. They totally exude honesty. But if you want the mechanics there to work on it then go elsewhere as they couldnt tell their arse from their elbow.
To say that I hacked off just doent come close.

Well I thought it was going to be the last post. I went in this morning to hand in the V5 which arrived this morning and the sales dude told me that if I was prepared to wait he would get the bike sorted. Once sorted he wants me to come in and take the bike out for a couple of days then pay for it if I am happy with it.
I have never in my born days come across such a warm and helpful dude. Ok so the mechanics need to wisen up but if its fixed its fixed. Cool.
Remember this is Newcastle's largest bike shop and this is the cheapest bike that they have on sale. I doubt that there are many if any dealerships that would offer this level of help.
It aint over till its over.

V5 = Proof of ownership issued by the DVLA also stating the make, year and relevant details of the bike.

Fingers crossed this time then. Try and find a small back street mechanic, grey haired been there 50 plus years and used to work on Vincents, they can get anything going, although mine retired 5 years ago, he still tunes 2 strokes though, clever bloke keeps tuning the winning MZ, (cheapest form of racing, and before you belittle it, his single pot MZ is over half way through the field of tuned twin pot 250 Yamaha's).

Just bought the above bike, a couple of weeks back. Salesman said everything was fine, all fixed and ready to go, it is a minter paid £1600 for it. Anyway rode of into the sunset, next morning it wouldnt start, was then taken back to dealer, told them it was the valve clearances, he said its not, i said it was this went on for a while, anyway got in touch with me, it WAS the valve clearances, not bad for a window cleaner eh? I had the bike back for about a week now its starts every morning on the button, so very happy all in all, once things were sorted. Only need a set of decent race cans, anyone got any for sale?

I've had my 1997 TRX for 16 months. It has a black tank, black frame, and silver engine (the best!). It was pristine and had done only 1,600 kilometers when I bought it, having sat unused in a garage for years. The first time I fired it up, it was very lumpy, so I changed the oil, added carb-cleaner to the tank and put in iridium spark plugs; and it now runs beautifully. When the TRX is in the garage, I plug it into a solar panel (a tenner from Maplins) to keep the battery charged. It usually starts fine; but if I leave it for more than ten days without being ridden, it can be a pig to start. However, if I resort bumping it, it has always fired up in the end. I note that it seems a little more reluctant to start now that I have fitted Art cans; perhaps there is less exhaust back pressure (?)

I suspect the reluctance to start is stale petrol in the carbs; that is, after ten days the volatiles may have evaporated, leaving a barely flammable goo in the carbs. No doubt bump-starting works as, by the time I've resorted to bumping the TRX, a shot of new fuel should have got into the cylinders. (It would be nice to be able to "tickle-the-carbs" to introduce some fresh fuel, as you could with an old Amal). Also, when bump-starting, the battery is being used solely to give a big fat spark, with no current draw from the starter motor.

My TRX has now done 7,500 miles, so surely neither the emulsion tubes nor the clearances should need attention yet? Or has anyone has to adjust the clearances or attend to the emulsion tubes at such a low mileage?

(Coincidence: I swapped my kilometer speedo panel after 10,254 km for an mph speedo panel. The new ex-eBay panel read 10,252 miles!)

Hi, I had the similar problem a few months back when I first got my current 99 TRX...wouldnt start, changed plugs, then it ran smooth for a short time before running rough ( 1 cylinder ), and then wouldnt start. After suspecting electrical woes, it ended up being worn needle jets which were flooding the plugs. New jets inserted ( 1 size smaller than original ...worked better with Over exhaust system ) , bike runs beautifully...happy days!.....Rick54
