Doing Shims

Hi Everyone... One inlet Valve .09 the rest 0.014..Time to re-shim.. Question- Is using 50/50 Moly & Engine Oil necessary on the rebuild ? or will Engine Oil do the job? Pls Help..

You'll be fine if you give the top end a good drizzle of engine oil with a few hand-rotations of the engine to make sure everything is coated before you put the valve cover back on.

I use Flea bay, search around and you will find a really good deal on shims, usually posted next day.
However I do have a shed load of old shims and so do other people, so I am sure someone clever could put up some sort of shim bank and we could all list unwanted shims by country people ask and they get what they want, maybe a fixed price per shim could go to the forum?

To make life easier for next time, do a mud map of both cylinders and the 3 inlet and 2 exhaust valves in each cylinder..
The circle I draw to represent a valve, I jot down the shim size and the clearance it is set to inside it.
i.e.
0.22 clearance
1.90 shim
Then next time I check the clearance, I know how much it has closed up and the current shim fitted.
I can calculate the shim needed before removing the cam and good chance I may be able to exchange it with another that may need replacing on another valve.
Just slot the paperwork in a clear skin folder thingo and place it in with your downloaded manual.

yeah I do that Brian, when you have torn these motors down a few times, this sort of thing starts happening! One of the reasons I would be loathe to chop the rex in - I know its foibles and not much phases me now
