Just passed 236,000km

Post by brenyw » Tue Aug 04, 2015 3:49 am

Meant to post at 235000km but I forgot.
The bike runs great but the rear shock is pretty much kaput
Still getting good economy, 400+km from a tank.
Brakes are nicer since I did a bleed (long overdue)

Well done!! =D>

How did you manage to rack up those k's in Brunswick, the traffic doesn't move. :P
But seriously, that's big k's on a TRX. A credit to you and bike.
It must be true, I read it on the internet.

Good testament to the strength and reliaility of the Trx motor.
My mate has a Kwaka 750 Zephyr which is well over 3000,000km.
Cam chain has been rattling your teeth for years when you ride it but again uses little oil and still runs good. He tends to not over rev the motor and regular oil changes plus as with his bike, if ran in correctly should give most modern Japanese engines good reliability.

Engine has never been opened, except for tappet setting and cam chain at 129,000km. Oil consumption is ok as I don't top up between changes (every 3-5000km) although the last oil change at 5000km only a litre came out.
Clutch still OK but I don't thrash it.
I rack up plenty of km as work is 43km from home.

Maybe a little top up wouldn't hurt. :D

Jaysus!! I get about 210 klms before reserve. It is running rich, though. I'm wondering if I should drop the jets or if it's possible that adjusting the ignition mapping could help.
I've left it on the setting which Cobba used when he installed it for me, so it should be fine. :)

I'm having it serviced in the next few days so any suggestions on improving consumption that I could mention to my bike mech. are welcome.

Cheers.

there is a fair chunk in reserve on the TRX with the stock fuel tap but, if you are using worse than about 5ltr per 100km then there is certainly room for improvement.

The main jet in the stock carbs is 142.5, which is too rich, if you change that to 137.5 you will see an improvement. The have cheap jets here.

Trying a leaner clip position on the needle is pretty easy and free, only about 20 minutes effort so why not give it a go

since I had the ported head, FCRs, Kent Cams and big bore exhaust I am geting 190ish KM to reserve - however it is great fun. just thank god fuel prices have come down a lot!

It used to drink oil at a fearsome rate as well - however since fitting new vlave oil seals and new piston rings I am on about 1200 miles per liter - which is OK. It used to be so embarassing out for a ride out and I would have to keep checking / topping up the oil every 100 miles. Most other peoples bikes didn't use any oil

Yup, the 900 has gulped down a hefty 4dl in 6000km.. =D>

I'm not sure what you mean there... You're not talking about standard TRX motors, are you?

Anyway, (my '99 TRX is standard apart from Ignitec ignition, DanMoto cans, K&N air filter and new KY-0570 Carb Repair and Parts Kits) I've been practicing doing my 'normal, every-day' commuting by trying to stay between 3 and 4k rpm. This seems unnatural (my instinct is to go 'blat-blat-blat' and cruise at around 4-1/2-to-5 thousand rpm), but it results in around 210 k's before reserve. If I ride by 'instict' and what feels right, I'm lucky to get 190.
I suppose I'm just wondering what the 'norm' is. How do you guys ride?

My bike is similar to yours (std carbs, Ignitec, Akra exhaust)and I usually ride like you around town, 'blat, blat, blat', but also longer rides with steady cruising around 4k.
I usually hit reserve around 280 to 300km.
It has always been this way, right from new.

I've dropped from 270-280 Km till reserve down to 260 when I hit reserve after the rebuild.
I'm running 155 mains and the needle clip sitting on 1 groove above centre with the fcr's but managed around 210Km on the last trackday.
