Hey all,

Proud new owner of my very first TRX, and my 2nd ever bike, and so far i have no regrets...

however one thing in particular has got me a little concerned. there's a suspicious amount of transmission snatch, so far i've tried tightening the chain (which was very loose originally) but that's only helped the problem a little bit. i also checked the throttle cable adjustment as suggested by another website. but the tranny snatch is still there. what got me even more worried is that there's a definate and rather loud wirring noise coming from around the transmission region furthermore there's an occassional "bump" which can be felt through the footpegs. initially i decided that the noise must have just beeen a characteristic of the engine, but the uncurable tranny snatch and bump through the pegs has got me thinking that perhaps i have a collapsed bearing somewhere in the transmission. about the only useful piece of info i have is that the noise is directly related to engine speed, and not road speed, so i was thinking perhaps that it would be in input shaft bearing...

anyone have any other suggestions??

KEDO have an "anti ruckel" kit wich suppose to cure this....but i guess it would be quite the same with a change of needlejet/jetneedle. One thing i´ve thought of is the cushdrive thingies...if changing thoose would do any difference. KEDO have those to....

this "anti ruckel" kit... that's suppose to cure the wirring noise? or the transmission snatch? because i'd like to see them both fixed.


if by "cushdrive thingies" you mean the rubber pieces that go in the rear hub, then yeah i had considered that myself, but just haven't got so far as to check it... will look into that later myself

Has the chain got any tight spots?

Hello mate and welcome!

You've discovered TRX's are sensitive to chain adjustment and throttle cable slack. I'd check the whole external drive train next, like Killer and Phuk say, but check it all, from rear sprocket/cush drives through chain to front sprocket (take the cover off n have a look).

Also, I'd get it up on a paddock stand, and get it running and in gear and listen/look for the problem. Be VERY CAREFUL doing this though else, if it falls off, it'll be off up the road by itself with you chasing after like some crazy Tom and Jerry cartoon.

Best to check all this before you start ripping the gearbox apart.

Check the nut that holds the engine sprocket on, mine decided to come undone and remove its thread!

Tranny-snatch ....??

When I first got this TRX it gave the occasioanl bump through the pegs. Felt like something was about to break in the motor, but it's stopped doing it. Just ride it!

Do you get tranny snatch often? fnarr, fnarr..................every time you pull away or just when you engage first gear after satrting the bike?

id be thinking the chain / sprockets are worn. If its only sometimes, you get a "bump", its possibly the chain slipping. Even if you tighten it, it will happen. Also get a new cush-drive at the same time, just to totally eliminate it. When you pull the back wheel off, you can inspect the wheel bearings, then you can be 100% confident its not the chain / rear wheel. Eliminating things totally does help to narrow it down.

You can OVER tighten a chain, which will give some interesting feelings..

Thanks for the tips guys, will have to try and get it up so i can check out the chain and sprockets more thoroughly... just wanted to make sure there wasn't a common weakness with the transmission that i didn't know about...

Someone I know (it wasn't me - honest) once tightened the chain so much that the swinging arm / suspension wouldn't / couldn't move.

Just had a quick look at the chain for any suspicious movement, and everything looks to be fine. the cush drives appear to be doing their job properly. when i put the bike in gear i could rock it back and forth (engine off) a small amount (an inch or 2) and all the slop seemed to be coming from the transmission. i couldn't move the chain back or forth myself if the wheel was stationary. i'll pull the cover off the front sprocket tomorrow to see if i can find anything suspicious there, it may still be excessive wear on the front sprocket, not sure yet..

another question and a rather embarressing one at that... where the devil is the oil level sight glass/indicator??? i spent ages looking over the bike the other night and couldn't find anything... even had a look through the yamaha manual i pulled off another website, and couldn't find anything there either.

finally, i've seen a few bikes with single sided swing arm conversions... what swing arm are they using and just how involved is the conversion? is it a full re-weld of pivot mounts etc or a fairly simple swap over?

It's there - honest If you're sitting on the bike it's kinda by your right knee but you'll need to kneel on the floor next to the bike to see it as it's tucked in.

Put a search in re filling with oil, you need to take it for a run to warm the oil up before you check it, then use a paddock stand to keep it upright, otherwise you can over fill!
