Took the bike out for a wizz today, decided to go up to cumbria and play around on some of the good roads up there.
Everthing was fine until suddenly while doing about 90 mph the chain snapped, no warning, it just let go.
I managed to get the clutch in in record time and pulled over on the A65, pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
It appears the damage only appears to be minor, the rear mudgaurd under the seat, there a two inch wide gash ripped right through it,
the wheel hub had some light scuffs and i've lost half my tool kit as the chain has ripped through the case and must have flung them all
down the road behind me. There doesnt appear to be any damage to the cases as theres no oil leaking out but the chain has stuffed
itself behind the front sprocket cover and i cant get it out just yet. I'ts cost me 75 quid for a new chain and sprocket set but thats nowt
compared to the damage it could have done .
I would like to say a HUGE thank you to the dozen or so "bikers" who chose to ride straight past me without even giving a second look as i was slowly pushing the bike
back up a 1 mile long hill to get back to the nearest safe place to get it off the road. "Cheers guys your all stars"
A real Big thank you to the landlord of the "Old Station Inn" on the A65 at Giggleswick who has stored the bike safe for me and
said its ok there until i can get back to sort it out in a few days, and also to his regulars who gave me a lift back up the road a few miles to
meet up with my wife who had got lost herself while coming to pick me up.

bad news but a lucky escape. happened to me once - very scary time. hope you're ok. if it turns out you need a set of cases I may be able to help you out.

Wow ... lucky it didn't do much more damage (a mate said goodbye to his Duke engine last year when it happened to him). Shame the spirit of biking didn't see you right today Even if I'm in the car I'd stop for a biker in need

You were very lucky, it could have been nasty.....

I once had a regina chain snap on the GSXR1100, it wrapped itself round my leg, luckily for me i only had a chain style bruise..

It was at that point i realised that chains only lasted 1000 miles on the GSXR

It didnt sink in until i took thr passenger seat off and saw a hole big enough to stick my arm through

You were lucky - that could have ended in all sorts of problems.

Can I aks though why, having had a chain break on you, you seem to have opted for a cheap chain. £75 for a chain and sprocket would suggest to me crap quality?

I may be wrong but i was under the impression the difference betrween X and O ring is the type of seal in the chain.
Does an X ring have any greater tensile strength than a similar size O ring ?

x ring is generally extra heavy duty. well done on the price!

your right the o ring is shaped like an x to hold in the lube better, but the plates, pins and rollers are also thicker/stronger.

ive seen o ring chains with the x style seals but are o ring spec.

this is scary deja vu!!!, thought this was one of my old posts!! my chain snapped not ten miles from there but stuffed my engine cases, this cannot be a coincidence, ok mine snapped chasing a buell past stocks reservoir through gisburn forrest, has taken almost two years to not sort out and am looking to offload all trx gear as have neither the time or expertise to sort out, once all gone will look for another trx with new x ring chain and sprox
