Hello chaps/chapesses,

I have just bought a bog standard, one owner, "only on Sundays" immac 2000 TRX with 5,400 miles on the clock. The dealer selling it to me says that the pipes and downpipes are one unit so I have to replace them with a whole system. He has quoted me £750.00 for a set with removable baffles.

All the pics I see of the TRX seem to have slip ons. Obvioulsy, I want to change the pipes so any recommendations advice?

The dealer is clearly full of sh*t. I'd say most bikes on here are running aftermarket silencers on standard headers.

Thanks PH. So what pipes have you got? Are you saying that the standard pipes are not one unit and that I can just take the end pipe off and put on slip ons?

Ok - so just spoken to dealer and he says he was mistaken - so... any aftermarket pipes that anyone can recommend - going to keep the headers obviuolsy...

I don't want them too loud as don't want to wake up the neighbours in eeh hearly hours with shattering boom boom etc. Will be using the bike as a long distance commuter

I'd go for whatever you can afford / like the look of and worry about the noise afterwards - you can always put in baffles. After all, ones persons loud .........

Ebay is your best bet for second hand pipes

Money no object? In that case, the Akrapovic 2-1 full system and forget slip ons. Saves a ton of weight, looks good, and you can crash on one side without bending a can.

But as I suspect money IS an object , have a look on e-bay for remaindered Motad Venom stainless slip ons. They're either e-marked or come with a removable baffle for neighbour protection (been there, done that). They're very economical for brand new cans and can't possibly be heavier than stock. I think about £100 the set brand new.

I've been very satisfied with my Micron carbon race cans, which have been on the bike for about 11 years now, and still polish up nice despite constant winter commuter battering. They do e-marked ones that are a little less "rude boy" AFAIK. Mine are definitely in the setting-off-car-alarms category, which amuses me, but then I don't have to worry about neighbours with pitchforks and flaming torches.

However, with full respect to Phuk, having past experience of the combination of race cans, neighbours and early morning starts, I would NOT recommend anything other than fairly restrained cans on a TRX. It's not worth the playa' hatin you'll get from next door.

Because I'm a poor student I bought a set of gutted and stubbied standard cans off ebay for £15.

They're set off car alarms loud but I haven't had any grief off the neighbours. Weigh a shit load less and look good (IMO) as well.

Eventually I'll get a set of proper race cans but it's just not a priority when I have the noise and a better look for under £30 all in.

You can buy the tags on ebay, though that doesn't really mean they're going to fool any one.

That's perverting the course of justice - a very serious offence if the copper knows what he's talking about!

As long as it doesn't say "not for road use" or "race use only" you'll be fine (although that can be polished off )

decent DB killers (available at £10 per can) take the edge off pretty much any slip on cans for the TRX

Approved by that thar Yoo-rop. They stick an "E" mark on it to show European approval. As said above, shows MOT testers and our friends in blue that your cans are legal.

Not a requirement though, if the cans otherwise meet all the legal requirements. To all intents and purposes meaning, they're not too loud! But you knew that already.

Anyway, Microns = goodness.

Quill, ART and CCC did TRX slip ons, as did Scorpion and Remus, I believe. American mfgs tend not to, since the TRX was never imported there.

The ones on mine are 'Phase One' apparently. Never heard of them myself but they sound nice. As long as the 'silencer' isn't stamped 'not for road use' or 'race use only' it's down to the MOT tester's discression. Find a nice tame MOT tester, feed him pop and crisps and it'll be fine

Carbon Microns, stamped not for road use, but i can't be bothered to polish them out, and anyway I have a set of standard 'lead' pipes if need be for the mot. Passed scrutineering at cadwell at 96 dbs.

Whilst its nice to have a big booming sound from the TRX, as you say, the neighbours may not agree, and if you are long distance commuting, I'd suggest keeping the stock pipes, cos after a while, the louder cans' drone can get very tiring on the hearing for you.

Of course at the weekends, since its only a 5 minute job to swap the cans over, a nice fruity set of polished alloy Microns (assuming you can still get them, as they went bust last year) are defintly the way to go.

I had a set of carbon Microns originally, but they lasted, ooh, 500 miles before they blew their guts out all over the road.

So, commute = stock
weekends = 5 mins + microns (or similiar!)
