FECK!!!!
I recommend an investigative engine strip, that`s serious oil usage, must smoke like a beagle on bensons?
OR is it `losing` the liquid engineering through leaks?

Have you got a leak ?

the motor is in dire need of a overhaul and as a minimum i would do the valve stem seals and hone the bore and rings ,,cost about £250 if you do it your self

Fek! Even mine isn't losing that much oil at the moment. Started to leak a tiny bit from the oil seal behind the water pump. Put in for a service last week to also fix the leak. Oil seal only comes as part of the whole water pump assembly. Mechanic bodged it up saying I'd get a few months out of it. Lasted half a day before it started leaking out at a much faster rate. Have to ride it as it is my daily transport. Stuffed a piece of absorbent sponge underneath the pump body to stop oil going all over the place. New unit is on order, but back log of 2 - 3 weeks! thinking of sending a nasty letter to Mr Yamaha Australia and also Mr Yamaha Japan.
Seriously that's a fair amount of oil usage!

Tony, Just come back from a similar trip myself. Mine has done about 32k miles before trip and on my usual fairly rapid road riding i tend to use a fair bit of oil (Not as much as you though). Like you i was a bit worried so took 1 litre spare. I only had to top up once and used about 250ml, the oil was towards the bottom mark when i got home but i used much less than i expected. Maybe 500ml total. We were cruising at about 80 on the motorway, but up in the hills were probably only doing about 60/65 down the straights to enjoy the scenery, enjoying the corners with our usual enthusiasm. We did 1750miles all told.
I guess it might depend on your riding, but you shouldnt use so much on the trip.
Hope this helps.
Dave

Got to thinking today, my bike isnt smoking like a beagle on bensons

At standstill warming up nothing coming out and ask friends when riding behind they said there is a small amount coming out but not a lot, so is it the oil im using, see picture. On the small writing at the bottom it says TECHNOSYNTHESE, it cost me £20 for 4 litres from my local shop. So before doing a whole top end is it worth trying a different oil. This bike was well looked aftered before i bought it, so maybe this is the problem, any help really appreciated. I might be a bit hasty on the 300 mile per litre its more like 400 but still not good enough

My bike drinks a lot more fully synthetic than when i used Silkolene comp 4, but i get it way way cheaper so only downside is the topping up....

Motul 5100 10/40 is what i have used for the last 4 years. I dont think changing brand will help.
What sort of riding do you normally do?

Tony, one last thing. Always check the oil after you have ridden for at least 10 miles. Stop the engine, get the bike upright and level and check the oil level. If you check it cold you will get a false reading.

FEK (again)...
This usage of oil is out of line! I do agree for a overhaul of the engine.
Good luck with it.
I'll do about 4500k's on a litre Sunoco 10W40 semi-synthetic.
