Suzuki were doing the swirly stuff years ago, called it TSCC (Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers).

I think your a bit confused,Stormy.All engines rely on some form of "swirly stuff" for in cylinder mixture distribution. Tscc is one type of "swirly stuff" thats been used since the 1930's on some 4 valve heads.Yamaha 5 valve heads are characterised as low velocity tumble flow .Although they can give excellant flow figures , the in cylinder mixture distribution is poor meaning they don't make as much power as the flow figures may suggest. This paper is about ways of improving mixture distribution in a five valve cylinder.Direct injection, twin plugs and swirl with tumble is something I will be trying in the tdm based engine I will be building when I can find a suitable fuel pump that doesn't cost more than the bike.

If my often faulty memory serves me well I remember reading somewhere that the TSCC system used by Suzuki was actually developed by Fiat and Suzuki were using it under licence.
