Hello Bennetts, I need to tell you that I have modified my bike

ok sir

I have taken the fairing off,

oh that's ok, no need to change the policy

and the speedo, changed the bars and lights

no problem sir

and the brakes have been replace by some from another bike

no problem sir - no change.

Oh and I put some legal but loud silencers on it too.

That's different I will have to cancel your policy and do a new one.

Why?
Silencers are not something you are allowed to change on this policy sir.

Oh ok redo it then.

ok sir , oh it went down by £40

Ok cool I 'll have that. !!!!!

this is fairly common

it is generally accepted by insurers that anyone changing and end can does so for performance purposes and that most will put on a race can (even if it is wrapped as a road legal can with a remeovable baffle) so they simply decline cover.

"For performance" - a whole 4-6hp at best?

The funny thing is that most aftermarket cans are cheaper to replace than OEM parts.

Even 4bhp is a 5% gain over stock - insurers can't ignore that!

It also represents an increased theft risk

A pair of carbon Termi's are a damn site more desirable than the standard cans

you don't win do you? I got a letter today from Bennetts saying I owed them £42, 12 quid for the insurance cover I had already had on the policy (fair enough) and £30 for the cancellation fee !! about which no-one said anything at the time, this rankles a little but the big annoyance is the letter which was sent on the 24th (arrived 27th thanks Royal mail) the last paragraph reads and I quote.

"Please call us on xxxxxx to arrange payment. If we do not hear from you by the 3rd of march, this matter will be passed to our internal debt recovery dept for further action to be taken against you to recover the due amount.

The guy on the line did not mention any previous letters when I queried "further action" so I must assume that the heavies move in after 4 working days of non payment. I work away a lot and it is conceivable that I may not have seen this for a week or more. What then, credit blacklist? Needless to say Bennetts are unlikely to get my business for a fifth year .

So just a warning, assuming you have not had this problem already, if they want to cancel your policy for changes to the bike try to avoid it, or wait until renewal time before changing the cans.

I have to wonder Cobba if the time will come, when you post up something that does NOT have these constant sexual innuendos.
Frankly, speaking for myself, I find that they increasingly, are becoming tedious.

Silencers are not something you are allowed to change on this policy sir.
I would see this as the insurance company giving themselves a clause they can use to wriggle out of paying up in the event of a claim.

Most bikers change cans. The policy says, probably in the small print, that you can't and that if you do the policy is void.

So, you stuff your bike, the assessor sees racecans, referrs you to the small print and says the policy is invalid, and walks off wringing his hands together!

Call me synical if you like, but..........?

Can't you tell them you've put the standard cans back on, so all is ok and as it was so no need to cancel policy, then swap them at renewal time and tell them then? (whether you physically swap them or not is up to you)

Or, if you're going to have to pay the cancellation charge anyway, just pay it and cancel it and then take your business elsewhere (Carol Nash, Devit etc) if you don't like how they've dealt with you.

PS, soz, forgot to include something for Cobba to get his teeth into: Err ...... how about: I've got a huge pair of cans.

:D

An insurer will theaten all sorts of policy avoidance but can only actually avoid paying out if it is deemed that the modification was a contributory factor to the accident. OK, it can say that, if it had know it would not have offerred cover, but they would struggle to actually refuse cover on the basis of a changed exhaust.

personally, i disclose everything to avoid this eventuality
