I guess you have checked both clutch cable adjustment points?

Sounds like the clutch is dragging (not fully releasing).Does it clunk badly when you select first gear with engine running? Check cable free play. Clutch release mechanism may be worn or clutch wrongly assembled.

yes lenny it will clunk into first, but only when cold, when hot no clunk.
when i try for neutral, it will either drop into first, or if i come up, it lifts into second,......but if i am moving, even very slowly its ok,? its not that i can never get it just getting harder and harder.

Another possibility. On the end of the shift drum hidden by the clutch is a star wheel. A spring loaded arm with a roller on the end (called the stopper arm) bears against the shift drum star wheel and indexes the shift drum in the 5 gears and neutral positions. If the spring which pushes the stopper arm against the shift drum is weak, broken or missing you can get this sort of problem.
