weird noises

Post by THE REVERAND » Thu Aug 05, 2010 5:07 pm

nah then pilgrims , as this is my 1st post i'll start by sayin hiya !! and thanks for having me . Now then , not had my trx for long , its a p reg import with about 18000k on the clock . Took it up for a blast round the lakes last week , the engine pulls like a train and the handlings so much different to my s reg speed triple . Love the bike to bits . I noticed tho that when revving the engine there seems to be a noise which sounds similar to when the tappits need adjusting on a car . Has anyone alse had this problem ? and if so what did it turn out to be ? Just thought i'd ask before i go chasing problems around the engine. Thanks folks

Hello and welcome to the forum. Now then, 18,000 kilometers and a `thrashy` top end?
Believe me, better a little noise than none at all, TRX`s can stretch valves and tolerances can close leading to poor performance and burnt valve faces and seats.
Unless it`s excessive I`m going to say to you, `leave well alone`.
You could carry out a compression check to see if there`s any marked differences between cylinders, maybe lift the cam cover to check on the camshaft lobes too but apart from that the only other likely culprit could be the cam chain, it`s not unknown for hard used bikes to get through one in 10 to 12 thousand miles so yours is already into that `realm`.
After taking the cam cover off, check the timing marks on the camshaft drive sprockets, if it`s a long way out, likely the camchain has stretched.

hello and welcome

all TRXs make a fair bit of noise from the top end - mine rattles like feck with race cams

As mince said, check the cam chain if you are worried

Welcome to the wonderful Planet TRX :D .
On a previous bike I had a slight knocking (more of a loud "tick") which I thought was a loose tappet or something.
That was what my local bike shop diagnosed too and lifted the covers to check / adjust. It turned out that they were spot-on, but the noise was still there. #-o
Finally traced it to a minute leak at the exhaust-head joint
¼ of a turn on one bolt and it was cured =D>
Rubber side down, Red side up is my preferred riding style.
