Mileage Capabilities?

1st post on the new forum!

Just been by one of my local dealers and spotted a blue trx. Seems to be in reasonable nick for a bike of 10 years but what is making me think twice is the mileage: 42,000.
The bike was advertised at £1500 and just for asking, he knocked it down to £1300 with a service, warrenty (not sure what it covers atm), mot & 6 months tax.

I'm sure he'll come down a bit more if I did turn up with cash in hand but will be getting a deal? What are these engines capable of and what goes wrong?

Thanks

Have a look at http://trxfiles.webgti.net/buying_guide.asp

Hopefully that will be of some help.

You could also check the post on Engine Life in this forum. There are owners here that have similar milage on their TRX's which have had no major problems to date and are still going strong.

Mine has just pasted 42,000 miles and she still pulls as strong as my mates TRX that has only done 25,000, as long as your not afraid of a bit of TLC i would worry to much. Fitting a Dynojet kit will cure any problems you can have with the carb emulsion tubes which are covered in depth on this forum.

I paid £1,200 for mine so your in the right ball park on price.

Mine is also a little past the 42,000 mark. Had the major service done a few months back and the valve clearances were apparently fine, but carbs were way out of balance. It's going noticeably better now that they are right.
I have noticed the engine is not as quiet as it used to be but as far as the way it runs it's as good as ever.

Mine now has 63000km. It had valves & springs at 28k. It's presently off the road awaiting a cash injection to cure blue smoke, another set of discs (will be the 3rd set), a shock rebuild and yet another set of fork seals to enable a roadworthy & Qld rego. (it might be awhile)
I think all this indicates hard usage, and to be fair these are all largely consumables in any case.
It could be (and was until recently) ridden with total disregard for these issues, though anyone behind me was a little annoyed at the fumes.
For what it's worth, i think consumable condition is more important than worrying about the largely bullet proof engine. A set of brake rotors will set you back $AU600, plus $AU100 for pads, add in tires $AU400, Chain & sprockets $AU300 and a valve clearence serivce and you could easily add $AU1500 or more if you're not careful.
At 42k the std shock will be basicaly toast, add another $AU300 for rebuild plus $AU100 for fork overhaul. If it needs rego as well, you could be well over $AU2000.
It makes a new SV650/ER6 look attractive when you do this.

NOTHING short of torture could make either of those, and especially the ER6 'look' attractive to me. They're both fun bikes to ride from what I hear but man, that ER6 is FUGLY!!!

Fair comment, but my point is really about money & to encougae buyers to go into any purchase with a good overall perspective. The example is intended to make the point that the 'right' money might even make those bikes look good.

Matt.

hey Brinx, i'm well cheers mate, i'm don't have the time/ facilities for anything major luckily i have a friend at Yamaha who put me in touch with their service manager. He arranged the service at a workshop where he moonlights on the weekend.
They told me to expect about $600 for the complete service, in the end because the valves were OK (which surprised me) it was less than $400, which i gather was pretty reasonable.
Where do you take it in Brisbane? I used to go to Simon at Northside in Brendale and he was pretty reasonable.
Let us know how you go with Tony's flatslides.
