Ok before you shoot me, I love my old style cafe racers and want to build one based on the TRX/TDMthe main issue is the front wheel as i don't want to spend stupid money so am looking for a wire wheel from a Yamaha that will either bolt straight up or with some minor mods work. I would like to keep the twin disks. The rear is based on the assumption that the rear from a KTZ750 Super Tenere will work on the TRX swing arm.

Any and all ideas welcome.

I dont think there is any that are a straight swap. But anthing will fit with some work.

I've seen a picture of a trx with wire wheels, but cant find it... it was a yellow bike...

Be careful of the middle pic above, its been photoshopped! Either that or the blury guy in jeans has had a chunk of his leg taken out by a wild animal.

Yep I didn't think there would be a straight swap, but was hoping to keep the mods to a minimum. I want to keep the duel front brakes and maintain as much of the TRX as possible this will make the Rego a lot easier in the long run.

Just another Q while I'm at it, TDM 900 late model to current, are the cases still the same design as the TRX cases?

Hi Rod, there are plenty of wire wheels about that could be modded to fit, I`ve toyed with the idea too. The latest Ducati retro`s have them for instance:

Sachs used to do 650 singles (Suzuki DR650 motors) and 800 twins (Suzuki VL / VX 800 motors) BOTH were fitted with wire wheels:

Obviously the rear wheel from the 650 and the front from an 800 would be the way to go, the 800 having shaft drive which kinda ferks the rear wheel up for use in a TRX and the front from the 650 being only single disc.
Alternatively...................................................
Have some hubs CNC`ed from billet to suit the TRX width, bearings, sprocket carrier, disc fitment etc, then lace them up to flanged Akront or Excell rims with stainless spokes, lovely jubbly!
Down side?
EXPENSIVE.
You might find you could utilise some XS650 wire wheels, although I`m not too familier with bearing diameters to suit spindles etc. Engineering skills and some time and effort can overcome such things though.

The middle photo reminds me of a SDR200

Nice little bikes those Sach 650`s, sweet handling and if you big bore and tune the Suzuki motor they go really well.

They will do your rim and spokes, twin disc spoked hub might be trickier ... google is your friend

If you find drop-in replacements in 17" you've hit gold!

Suzuki GT750`s, Yamaha XS650`s Some early TZ`s all had twin disc hubs, it`s a matter of joining forums etc to glean information and dimensions etc.
Some shopping around the classic bike sites and forums might throw something up too.

ive just modded an xs650 hub into Fzr forks with only a slight mod to the spindle to get wire wheels in

The best bit is Fzr floating discs bolt straight to the xs650 hub .......

easy peasy to get the same mod into a trx id think

I see oil cooler etc and suspect a single.

A few years back, i had Warners in Caloundra make some wheels for my singles.
Mike was stiil alive then, but his son has taken the reins and seems to be quite good (or so i hear).

The whole bike is a Triumph speedmaster engine in a Rickman metisse frame ........ Jota yokes holding fzr forks with xs front hub .... flattrack seat and alloy tank ....... oh the list is endless

Slow day here, I must get out more..

I some hunting around for doing the same thing myself. There was someone down on the Gold Coast (maybe?) when I spoke to them, get it, spoke hehe. ........ anyway..... they mentioned machining teh centre from the TRX wheels and welding a flange to them. Around $2000 with a wheel build.

I also spoke.........shh.......with the guys at Talon here in Brisbane and they mentioned doing a twin disc front hub was possible but would cost a bit.

If you can find the hubs/wheels mentioned above, that would make it a whole lot easier I reckon.

Man that's just a little bit out of my budget I'll keep looking at the swap meets for an XS front hub and Super Tenere rear..
