I did over 200 miles last sunday through the twisites of staffs hereford and wales, at the end of which the palms of my hands were aching. Has any one tried any grips which have superior comfort to bog standard Yamaha ones? What about foam? would be interested to know of others experience. Legs and arms and back also ached a bit

The only way IMO is to develop a correct riding style, grip the tank with legs and don´t have any of the bodyweight on the bars. Arms in 90 degree angle and elbows in...not Spies style even if it seems to work!
A great way to practice is to put left arm down or on back and ride the twisties with right hand only, then one can´t put any weight on bars.
Stompgrips are pure gold...

try Progrip Dualgrips.
hard in the more wear prone/ structural area and supple in the palm.

These are great grips, especially the Johar range with the contoured shape and grooves. A Harley riding pal swears by them!:

I had the Classic Road ones on my old CX500,they were fantastic!

However, I hated them on the TRX, lacked feel, very comfy, but very vague.

YMMV of course...
