Why, Oh Why, Oh Why.

Finaly get the TRX running ok and what do I do...I have a brain wave. I know what i will do as Its now running ok I will get my Karscher (spelling) out and give it a good wash. So out with my bucket and sponge, get a nice lather going and wash it all of with the jet wash. Spend another two hours polishing stand back and admire, aint she pretty. Sunday morning dawns a lovely Blue sky, I cant wait. Do a few jobs around the garden so the missus wont kick off when I am gone most of the day. Get bike out of garage, start it up...it sounds well and the sun is bouncing of that highly waxed tank. To the bottom of the road, down the hill and give it a little throttle, and nothing then it picks up again. Turn the fuel tap to reserve just to make sure thats all it is. Get some fuel top the tank up and head onto the motorway, give it a bit to get some speed up and again the engine start to die. Let the revs drop and the power comes back, limp home. I should have known better. But having said that I have Washed the Busa the same way many times to no ill affect, but then again the Busa has a full fairing protecting the motor etc...ah well, every day's a school day.

Loosen the tank at the rear through bolt (6mm allen bolt) slip off the fuel, vacuum and fuel overflow hoses under the fuel tank at the fuel tap, take out the two tank front bolts up by the headstock and you can swing the tank up vertical out of the way.
Then you`ll need to pull apart all the connector blocks and spray them with a silicon water eliminating spray, ONE at a time with the ignition OFF.
Once you`ve dressed all the terminal blocks you`ll find you can usually safely pressure wash the TRX, albeit stay WELL clear of wheel, headstock and swingarm bearing zones or you`ll push the grease out.

Sounds like a wet coil breaking down under load to me.

Mmmm...the coil is the only thing I did'nt spray with WD40. Should I take the coil of and dry the connectors and spray with WD cheers David.

Coil`s (plural) one each side. Maybe give them a soak yes, pull off the plug leads one at a time then you can uncscrew the HT lead from the coil body.
Reassembly is a simple reverse of the procedure.

Thanks for that.

id check the coil leads for any rub wear that might have worn through the coil leads and earthing out to the motor with the moisture...im using quality spray oil around the coils regularly to keep rubber supple and to protect earth contacts.
The rubber leads and things will be starting to spoil nowadays given the age and all,..and might have hairline splits in bends....keep em supple.

for the inside of the connectors wd40 etc is ok, but for the outside try to use a non conductive spray such as a lanolin based one as you dont need coil leads bridging wet gaps with any help eh;)
cheers

Makes sure your spark plug covers are intact & in position, that caught me out in the rain once

Step away from the WD40! Seriously! I have no idea what the obsession with that stuff is - and all you will do is potentially mask an issue.
The only thing I use it for on a bike is cleaning wheels.
The fact that you cleaned your bike does point towards an electrical issue but I would check your vacuum hoses first - are they connected properly or kinked?
If they are OK, get the hair dryer out and dry each and every electrical connection. Unfortunately, intermittent electrical gremlins are a bitch to diagnose.
Good luck

Spark plug holes full of water? the drain holes get bunged up.

Ah yes Richy but IF the plug covers are pushed on correctly very little water will be able to ingress past them anyway.
What normally happens is connections (dirty and or / corroded / oxidised) are compromised further by moisture, the resultant increases in resistance in low and high tension wiring then leads to misfires or worse stops the bike running altogether if current finds a path to earth.
Hey Phuk, why the dislike of WD40? I know it`s not silicon based but for years before ACF50 appeared it was my snake oil of choice for all things` protection` on motorcycles.

ACF 50 rocks.
WD40 is fine for lubrication, cleaning or even water displacement (although I use GT85 as it smells better

) but over time it becomes a non-conductive coating so shoudl not be used on switches etc.

I agree, GT85 is great stuff and I get it fer nowt with my Halfords trade card.
ACF50 really is the dogs danglies, though at a price!
Ever tried it on a chain Phuk? I used the dregs from a can after it was close at hand and my Motul chain lube wasn`t, WOW, a very sweet running chain I can tell you.

I haven't as it goes
Although I do confess I have used WD40 on a chain (and in fact carry a small can in my euro touring kit for that very reason)
