just got the bike i need to get the spark plugs out i can get to them by swinging the rad out of the way u i bought a three eighth drive twelve mill plug socket i can get it down to but not on to the plug have they to be extra thin walls the answer must be out there somewhere im stumped http://www.trx850.com/phpBB_forum/posti ... e=post&f=5#

Is the tool kit under the pillion seat ? Might have the plug socket in it...........

i second that. my toolkit has a plug socket in it.

lift up the seat and have a look for the toolbag.

It's a pain, best way is to undo the bottom radiator mounts to gain some more room. Spark plug socket in the tool kit is marginal, but it will work.

Should be 18mm off the top of my head, maybe that's the problem

Hi,

I'm new owner too and have just changed the plugs for the first time (I wanted to check their colour - all was well!). Although I had a tatty tool kit on the bike, the plug spanner wasn't in it. So, this is what I did and it all worked well ....

1. I bought a generic dual ended plug spanner from my local Yamaha dealer (Flitwick motorcycles) for about a fiver - I took along an old plug of the right size from a previous bike (lots seem to use the same NGKs) to check that it fitted.
2. This slotted in the hole and I had room to fit a standard (not super thin) socket on the other end.
3. I undid the radiator top and bottom to give myself some more room.
4. Be warned - when I took one of the caps off, it left the rubber sealer bit down over the plug, meaning I couldn't locate the plug socket until I had realised this and extricated it with some snipe nose pliars!
5. Having got the old ones out using a standard socket drive, I stuck some good plugs (Iridium) in with the plan that they'll stay there for some time!

Buoyed by this success, I changed the coolant and checked the air filter - very happy to find a nice K&N fitted!

I'll just ride it now although I know it needs the carb emulsion tubes doing - it doesn't like poodling through towns.
