My new baby!

This is my new toy. I'm new to the forum. Ive been riding for a while. first bike was an FZR 250 that I enjoyed so much I eventually broke all the farings off. So in a way, I had a naked bike before I realised I wanted one. Anyway, now im older and wiser and have wanted one of these since the missus said I could get a bike again. (havent had a bike for about 4 years)
got the bike early this week and so far I am loving the decision I made. fuk'n sick bike to have. Has a few little mods already which is what I wanted (blue spots, staintunes) but is hasn't been ruined like some out there. I wouldn't mind removing the front fairing and replacing with a single or dual headlight, round digital speedo, and handle bar mirrors. I know its been done but I like the look, nothing to radical. And after riding it home on the freeway the wind was brutal so I figure it really cant get any worse by removing the fairing entirely. After that Ill see how I'm feeling and see if there's anything else I want to do and go from there.

I had a few questions though. if your a little careless and drop the clutch to fast taking off, it makes a horrible whirring noise. I've tried to get some kind of info off the forum and internets but so far came up with nothing.
Also it really hates being any lower then 2000rpm, if you try take off with any lower then that forget about it. Your in shudder city. from looking at the forums it seems like this is pretty common, I was just wondering if theres and easy fix?
Lastly the staintunes have no baffles, I think it sounds fuk'n awesome but was just wondering how that will effect performance.

Anyway, looking forward to contributing and having a chat in the future. Sick bike and best decision I made to get back on two wheels using a TRX!
Cheers, Guysie

Hello and welcome Guysie.

Ok, the stock gearing is a tad tall.
Yamaha wanted to hang onto the Ducati`s at the top end so geared the TRX accordingly but you`re far better off with lower gearing, it transforms the stock TRX in oh so many ways.
The forum is full of gearing threads but the most common would be 17 t on the front and 42 t on the rear.
Ok you`re `whirring` noise, could be the normal gearbox whine, especially 3 rd gear, but could also be clutch slip, do the revs rise but the speed lags severely behind?
Don`t worry about loosing power through lack of baffles it will be tiny on a stock motor compared to having baffles fitted.
The stock TRX cans are pretty restrictive and the free flowing race cans will usually liberate a few horses, but of course if you`re worried about plod giving you a tug generic slip in baffles are readily available. I`m certain some of the other Aussie lads will be along to wise you up on where you can get them, chains and sprockets too.
I`m guessing you`re in Aus because the FZR 250 was only ever a rare grey import in the UK.

Surprisingly stain tune actually make you aware that there are gains of upto 3 hp by leaving the std baffles in place in their cans. Nice clean looking jobbie

Welcome and congrats on a nice bike. The TRX is certainly a great sounding bike through the staintunes (and plenty of other pipes). I recently went for a ride with a mate who's TRX has the staintunes, we also had a Duc 996 with Termi's and my SP1 with Arrow pipes and the TRX sounded best of the bunch (all good sounding bikes). :thumbleft:

Thanks for the tips gang! Good call Mincehead, the lack of 6 inches of snow also could be a give away :P Im in Wollongong Aus. I thought I added my location to my profile but must have stuffed it up.
Just finished giving her a good wash and polish. Unfortunately one of the badly sun damaged plastic windscreen bolts broke so that can be my first fix!

Thanks for the tip off on the gearing, Ill have to double check whats installed and go from there.
The whirring sound seems way more like clutch slip as it isnt noticeable through the gears, only on take off.

Ill also have a hunt around and check out the baffle situation(cost availability ect). I wouldn't mind the extra power but it does sound brutal (in a good way) without. Might be worth a test though.

you'll find what you need in the gearing change. and it's a cheap option...the price of the baffles is  ..I looked on their site when i had mine fitted... Better off spending a couple of bob on basic suspension mods  decent front springs help keep you pointed in the right direction

some . . not all . . . TRX and TDM have a howl from the clutch basket on takeoff.
it seems that the basket cannot clear itself of oil quick enough hence the howl.
not to worry tho ok :)
16/39 16/40 17/40 17/42 all good  .
i have been told the tall gearing was for the ride by ADR noise test.
mmmm
cheers
