Merry Christmas everybody
I am refitting my rear brake hose...and I've forgotten the route.....
there are 2 ends to the brake hose...one ' bent ' end fits on top of the rear brake master cylinder....and goes down...then through the ' bridge '....( I also removed this and cleaned and sprayed silver, but this only fits one way )..then the clip which is screwed to the frame...is screwed....downwards..or upwards...mm..I removed it to clean and spray silver...and can't remember how it goes...mmm..it holds the hose....one section fits into the clip......
The hose then fits through a plastic retainer....then down to the rear brake....
I note that the hose at the rear brake cylinder needs 2 copper washers..one below and one on top, to locate the holes...for the fluid to pass through
Has anyone followed me ..so far..or is it too many beers today ??

Hello again

Just looking at Haynes again....there is a photo...6.24 which shows the clip....fitted downwards..........so that's one question answered.....and the photo...on 1.5 shows the brake hose...with the ' bent ' end...going to the rear brake master cylinder....going down....so that's 2 questions answered...so tomorrow...I shall...continue....next step..is the bleeding....Mmmmmmm...I have an automatic bleeder......so I am looking forward to the excitement

That's just right.......I should be alright now...I now need to make sure the holes in the hose...line up...with the outlet holes..in the rear brake...and the rear brake master cylinder...by using enough copper washers...

I thought it looked simple 3 months ago when I took it all to pieces....but..I didn't take any photos.....and just forgot.........

I am not quite sure what you mean by lining up the holes in the brake line with the holes in the master cyl.etc You just put one copper washer either side of the fitting and do it up.The copper washers are for sealing,they have nothing to do with lining up holes.The banjo bolts are smaller than the inside of the actual fitting so the fluid flows around the inside of it and the washers seal the fitting.

But if u don't use the washers......the bolt doesn't line up...with the hose etc...so I think the brake fluid won't flow through...methinks

G'day Roy, I am obviously not understanding what you mean.The washers have to be used for sealing.Are you using the original brake lines?If so, the banjo fittings are swaged onto the lines, so the holes have to line up.
Somebody else might have to step in here because I am lost as to what Roy is saying.Sorry Roy.

Pay attention, there will be a test following this lesson.
This is the rear brake master cylinder drawing, but the union and banjo fittings are basically the same for every hose end.



1. is the union bolt, this is hollow through the centre of the shaft and has a hole through the shaft (seen as a black dot) between the head and the beginning of the thread.

2. is the banjo bolt attached to the end of the hose and the sealing washers (copper or aluminium). These washers are used to provide sealing of the joint and must be replaced each time the bolt is removed.

The diameter of the unthreaded part of the shaft of the union bolt is narrower than the internal diameter of the banjo bolt, this allows fluid to flow from inside the union bolt, through the hole, and into the hose attached to the banjo bolt.
There is no requirement for the holes to align.

For clearing the air...........what I talk about seems simple to many.........but I am a numbscull.......sometimes......and like to check and make sure, when it comes to mechanical things........ better safe than sorry
