After Sundays pootle I'm going to be dismantling the bike for a refurb and paint jobby. Should I get the engine inspected before I paint it and refit ? I'm no mechanic, it seems fine except for a bit of a rattle at the top and a thirst for oil For piece of mind I think I should, but who'd do it and what would they look for and sort out ?

Compression test and if all is well it must be worth renewing the valve stem seals, reseating the valves and checking/adjusting the valve clearances. Check the cam chain & adjuster.
Motomax 33 in Romily Stockport was recently recommended by a forum member so it might be worth asking them for a price. $$$$$$$$$.

My advice - leave well alone unless you are able to replace rings / split cases etc.

If you pull the engine out, as a matter of course I woudl be cleaning the oil tank out - you will not believe the sludge that sits in there! But then you should really be doing rings, valve stems, cam chain and checking main bearings. But that's gonna cost you!!!

As has been said, do a quick compression test and if you are OK - leave alone

I agree with Pete.

My current full motor rebuild from split case with main bearing shells is costing close to £200 in Yamaha bits (seals, gaskets etc). Genuine head gasket alone is £55 and base is £15.

Cam chain will add £50 to this without guides. Valve seals are about a fiver each so another £50. It soon adds up.

I think Id take the opportunity whilst the engine is out to get the valve clearances checked and replace rings and valve stem seals and clean oil tank ...... all straight forward requiring minimal dismantling

Bear in mind that if a compression test shows good pressure then the rings can be left alone as well so that could save a few bob too ........

Other than that polish n paint and get back on it

I'll do that then or get the tinnies out and watch you do it

Goes beyond what I would call minimal dismantling?! Not so bad if you can do the engine work yourself but paying for labour would be very pricey.

If you are taking the head and barrels off you may as well throw in a JE kit while you are at it.

Then fit FCR's and your crank will go like mine has and you'll wish you hadn't touched it!!!

No need for FCR's

It all looks very easy in the Haynes book of lies but ...... And if you are questionning this then you probably don't have the right tools.
