As i can no longer ride track days i was looking at getting into sprinting. To start off with i was thinking about using the TRX, my feeling is that the torque and fluid power delivery would be great for starting out on. I'm not looking to set fastest times, just have a bit of fun.
My question is....Do we think the clutch will be up to the job? and is the motor likely to eat it's crank? The engine is low millage so the bearing clearances should be OK.

I feel that the TRX clutch is mighty strong. No problems at all with 90rwhp and track use and my clutch has done 40k+ miles.

As for the crank, Mince commented a while back that the Rex does not have a weak crank.

The motor is however sensitive to oil level and oil quality (routine maintanence) and it is neglect that will lead to bearing failure.

Can't see that sprinting will do any damage at all as long as you are not revving through the redline.

The TRX has a very tall 1st gear so will put stress on the clutch with continual fast starts. But nothing to worry about mechanically with that or any other part of the engine as long as you maintain regular service intervals.

That's good new, Yamaha's have a bit of a reputation for weak clutches around the 90's. Nice to know they got it right with the TRX
I was planning on changing the gearing a bit to give it a bit of an easier time off the line.

What do you guys call Sprinting ?

They say (you know, those people) that the TRX clutch is the same as that found in the FZR1000 but without the stabilising ring around the basket, whatever that is. Possibly the explains the bad noises that can result from quick take offs uphill (that's normal, right?). Anyway the point being the clutch will likely be just fine with anything you can throw at it.

I think that sprinting is a bit like drag racing, with only 1 bike at a time, or like a hill climb without a hill, where you race the clock rather than an opponent. Don't see or hear much of it in Oz.

After the Surfers Paradise Raceway was closed, the MG car club used to put on a horizontal hillclimb using the back half of the circuit.
sort of like leyburn or murwillumbah's speed on tweed.

Talking to Neil Spalding from Sigma , he made me aware even with the slipper clutch I have with 1 extra plate than the std TRX he recommended using R6 plates (Fiction and steel) if doing Racestarts.. If not the std Trx steels would be fine.

Sprinting is a relaxed version of drag racing..It tends be be over 1/4 mile and on old air fields. That said they do also use Santa Pod and another drag strip that the name escapes me You can run everything from stock road bikes, to purpose built nitro burning drag bikes and even classics. No top fuel bikes though.

They do it near us on an old airfield - quite well organised with first aid & marshalls on site (for a proper event). Some people use the airfield for practice too, but that's not a good idea as safety markers aren't out (last year there was a fatality - bike vs concrete bollard at silly speed )

Do you have any feedback on the use/benefit of a Sigma clutch with the TRX?

Hopefully next week the motor goes in for it's major overhaul and I'll ask to get some pics of the clutch set up as Sigma themselves hadn't actually set one up themselves. So I'll pass on any info to Neil and his team and the members on the TRX site with a few pics and explaination if any mods needed.
