Got my R1 USD's and blue spots but what wheel ?

Post by robthomason » Sat Feb 28, 2009 5:34 pm

Hi folks, got my forks but now I need a wheel I believe if I want to keep my mechanical speedo. Is it a thunderace or thundercat wheel I need ?? any year ? or doesn't it matter ?? Any advice greatfully received.

regards, rob

Hi Rob,I`m quite new around here but a quick search turned this thread up:

http://trx850.motomaniac.net/forum/view ... n+R1+forks

If it was me going down this route I would try a trip out to a breakers yard(after a phone call to explain what I wanted to do)armed with a set of vernier calipers and a steel rule/tape measure to check out my options.
I can imagine at least having to change wheel bearings for those with a larger internal diameter for the R1 spindle, and likely the need to make up or adjust wheel spindle spacer lengths due to the fork spacing in the yokes.
I personally would plump for a digital dash and araldite the magnet in one of the disc bobbins but then my bag of TRiX is already streetfightered.
I`ve recently sourced a complete YZF750 front end for mine,it`s currently running standard forks etc but with a billet top yoke for the renthal bars.

Bottom of my 03 fork is converted to take the trx wheel, didn´t do it myself but it seems pretty easy if you have access to a lathe...

It's a Thunderarse front wheel and from memory you'll need to remove about 8mm from the inside bearing face of the forkleg.
