other engines into trx?

Post by 666mph » Sun Feb 27, 2011 1:22 pm

Hi. I can't see anything using the search function but has anyone ever heard of people putting other types of engine into a TRX850? I have a complete bike minus the engine. As TRX/TDM motors are hard to find what about putting iin a tl1000 motor or maybe a Honda v4? The vfr motors look plentiful and affordable. Maybe a big yamaha single? If anyone has any links to this kind of modification i'd like to see them.

Cheers.

Nice work finding that pic Fung. Got to admit that looks better than I thought it would. TL1000 motor is filling my mind at the moment though.

Sounds like a lot of work to me fitting a TL engine... probably lots of fiddling, hours and money spent. You will also have to make major upgrades to improve the ride in order to cope with the prower increase... R1/YZF USD front end, YZF rear end, rear shock, brakes etc...

You would only spend time searching for an engine, beit an 850TRX/TDM or better a 900TDM and fit it straight into your chassis.

I will pull my hat off to you if you go down the TL engine route and succeed... what a cracking project and bike it would be! 8)

Fair point drix. Though if that kind of motor ever wnet in there i'd run it with stock front and rear as a base setting to start with. TRX is a sweet handling bike to start with and i'm doubtful that putting forks and swingarms from other bikes will improve the handling. I'd admit that the compoenent quality may be better though. It's all the mucking about with geomitry and spring rates ect. That said swapping the motor is opening a bit of a can of worms in the handling dept anyway. If it happens i'll post it all on the forum.

so..........what about a big single ??
as the TRX motor leaves a good sized space, you can play around.
something road based so you get good gear ratios.
perhaps an SR500 bored out or a DR600/650?
whatever fits in eh?
then you have both svelte and chic !
i have seen a few XRGV, so why not TRXR or DRX or even TRKLX ?
any self contained (mostly) engine/gearbox unit you fancy that you can get engineered and approved.
happy hunting !!

What about a stroker? LC, YPVS, or a RZ500?

but wouldn't a fire breathing, big balled single in such a nice chassis be just the ticket to stuff it up the inside/round the outside of all your multi mates?
it'd be very light and slim :ride: 8)

 Munch mammoth route with a bored out NSU car engine!!!

XS650 can be bored out to 900 if you want to go that route!

I'm glad I came across this topic, I've been thinking about it for a while.

My pick would be the VFR 800Fi engine. I can't say just from looking at pics if it would fit but it does have the same geometry as the TRX engine. It would be a lot of work routing the exhaust and giving the radiators a home but the payoff would be sweet. Who cant say they love the sound and feel of a V4? I wish Honda had made a V4 sportsbike in the last 15 years, (the VFR is more touring than sport.)

I've had an inline four and a few twins but have always felt the V4 was a great mix of the characters of both.

You would be better with the normally aspirated VFR800 motor, everyone I know who has ridden the later injected versions complains of fuelling that`s a bit `on / off`.
Getting on the power out of corners unsettles the bike when the fuelling glitches cut in.
Someone needs to start building a modern variant of these beasts:
weslake%20v%20twin%20002%20(Large).jpg
http://www.ukdrn.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2237

Notice how slim they are, and with modern tolerances, maybe ceramics, fuel injection etc the old Godden-Weslakes 100 bhp on pump gas could easily be pushed up to over 130 bhp.
Now THAT would make a very interesting TRX.
