if the inlet cam seizes, which is not uncommon, it is not unusual for the inertia in the crank to keep the crank rotating, which strips teeth off the timing gear on the crank as the timing chain has stopped moving at the camshaft, until a piston meets some valves.
I was lucky then. I've never heard of it happening before and wasnt too sure why it had happened. Now i know its nearly as thirsty on oil as my rd350 i can guess that it was a lack of oil that caused it. once i'd re-profiled it, i tapered the oil feeds and cut a grove into the aluminium where the shaft sits, seems to bo doing the job.

the stock TDM900 motor DOES NOT burn oil
there have been 1 or 2 members on carpe who have reported minor 1off level drops, but nothing prolonged or common

TDM900 2003 - commuting tool
TDM850 mk1 - scratching & touring

nope
cheaper to modify the frame and fit a complete 900 motor than have the work done on an 850
everyone i know thats looked at modding the 850 like that has turned away for one reason or another
either cost or complexity
i dont even know if theres enough meat in the block to do the work :(

Well if its just the liners that are different then we can put the barrels and pistons and all other bits off the 900 on top of the 850 crank? I'm sure this has been tried before but i dont know where the info is. I'll have a look.

im not really sure if ceramic coating / liner is the real solution here.

Different cylinder walls means different piston and ring design. The size and spacing of the oil ring is how much oil the piston will retain for lube. If you have this fairly large, obviously its going to rub more oil on the cylinder, and thus burn it faster. Black sooty exhaust + loss of oil.

Ceramic liner requires less lubrication. Because of that you can run less oil on your oil retainer ring on your piston. If you strip your engine and regap your oil retainer ring, you can reduce the amount of oil it holds and rubs onto your wall.

2 different performance shops and JE pistons both advised AGAINST ceramic / nikasil bores and recommended matched rings / pistons. Ive yet to run the engine with this new setup, but its quite surprising that i was advised against it. It cost money to do it, so it was sort of a loss for them. JE also advised against piston coating, even tho its a motorbike with higher revs than what a car produces.

Im not saying a liner is bad, it obviously works. But if you have stock TRX pistons + piston rings, its still going to throw the same amount of oil on the walls.

when i fitted my JE 878 kit i checked the oil ring like you said quan time,, and with the oil expander installed ( the wavy bit ) on the piston and then placed in the bore, the piston just went down under its own weight ,,so not much ring pressure on the bore ,, this is how it came from JE so thats how i left it , and so far no smoke and as far as i can tell no oil useage ,, allthough its early days yet and i did the stem seals as well ,,fingers crossed :D :D :D :D
