New front PR3 fitted on Sunday (along with DynaBeads) and tested in them thar hills out back of chez Davamb. Damn mighty is the synopsis. What an improvement. Maybe the old TRX forks were knackered, I don't know, but this is one hell of a step up!

My buddy Andreas dropped by and we had a bit of a bike fest. He tried the Norton and the TRX and I rode his WR250X and the TRX. That little motard is just so much fun on the twisties. If only it had a couple of hundred more ccs it would be an absolute hoot! Twas a good day. Among many others that we sampled, the Kongwak - Bena road is such a blast.

Only thing that spoiled it was hitting a roo in the MX5 when I went out after dark resulting in a fair whack of damage to the little car. Didn't do the roo any good and I felt like a shit as I couldn't put it out of its misery. Been commuting on the TRX this week as a result while I wait for parts. Bit of a boring ride up and back to Hallam, but it's still enjoyable. Just not enough corners!

Thought I'd start looking into putting the TRX wheel onto the R1 front end over the weekend, but after detailed investigation, it looks like it's not possible. Has anyone else ever grafted the later R1 front end onto a TRX or only the earlier one?

No way you will be able to run the speedo drive Dave.
Otherwise it's the same as an Aprilia or any other type, take the trx steering stem and fit it into the new lower.
Then fit the whole new assembly.
Assuming you've bought the new front as a unit.

The easiest is still the yzf750.
Done four of them now.

Sorry Alex, I better back up a bit. I've been running a complete R1 front end for over a year now and reckon it's the biz, but wanted to put my old TRX front wheel back on and get a speedo back (am running a pushbike speedo at the moment). Looked over your guide and it seemed like you could machine up adaptors to take the TRX wheel and axle in the R1 forks. This seems to be true for the earlier R1 front end, but not the later one I've got fitted to mine. Can live with the wheel I guess, but a proper speedo wouldn't go astray.

I've done an axle mod Dave with no issues and you can run the Std trx speedo. There is no locating lug on the fork for the speedo to stop it turning when tightening the front wheel, but if you hold it in place when you do the axle up all works fine. When the axle is tight it won't spin.
Axial calipers on the early R1 forks an easily be spaced to suit the discs so check that measurement too .
If the later front end has radial calipers , you may have to space the wheel/discs

I've been making some progress to interfacing the TRX front wheel with the later R1 front end. Needed a couple of bits turned up and a bit machined off the LHS fork leg:

It's gone together ok and the wheel runs true and central without any binding.
The problem I have is that the discs need to be spaced about 1.5mm further out to end up where the R1 calipers expect.
So I want to space the discs out from the hub with washers. Is this a sound practice or is this not an advisable way of going about it?
A shim would be great, but might be rather difficult to fabricate. I have washers.

All rather accaddmic perhaps as it appears to be friggin' impossible to undo the allen-head screws that retain disc to hub!

Can you move the calipers instead of the disks?

On mine with the std front wheel and the Dymag I had to space the caliper to get the disc to sit central to the caliper. Like Dicky said, a washer between the caliper mount and the caliper. This will space the caliper inwards and will do exactly the same as spacing the disc out.
Better option as it keeps the disc weight a little closer to centre of the hub too.

The Duomo front mag from the xjr1200 I was running for the first few months of the rebuild had a wider hub and I actually removed material from the caliper mount on the caliper itself to get things central.

I use an R1-2003 fork and has thin spacers on the calipers, cant be more than a mill...

Personally I'd space the disks, just means that you don't have to keep repositioning washers each time you take the front wheel out. 1.5mm alloy sheet cut to size.

As you say the bolts are a PITA to get out, usually locktighted or corroded try a little heat on the hub.

Soldering iron directly on the bolts....
