Vee Two cams or other?

Just bought some cams off ebay.....Quote:

Yamaha TRX850 performance camshafts

for the 270 degree crank engine, also found in the TDM 850

they have more lift & duration

when I had these fitted they gave 94bhp at the crank,

85bhp at the back wheel with a dynojet kit & Micron cans

Peak power produced at 7750 rpm ,so no issues about stressing the engine

only downside I ever found was slight lose at 4000

They are Australian made from billet & no machining of head or piston needed

Just drop in,check shims & hey presto instant 7 - 8bhp

The chap who dynoed it was impressed because he said a SP1 makes

110bhp at the back wheel & the TRX is lighter

There was a question around what make they were, the response was there were potentially two cam manufacturers in Aus.

One being Vee Two and a.n other and how can i tell which brand?
Is the claimed bhp reasonable?

Where my question actually, wanted to know if the dude knew what he had in the bike. I thought the lobes looked.....strange.
Kinda black with scratches!?

Let us know how it goes!

KW, some cams come with a coating on the which will wear off due to use. The matt coating looks like such a treatment..

But i wont know until i get them

Hi Phil ,I had them in for a few months, but I had them second hand, there is
no sign of wear, just where its polished through use.

Maybe not a good photo?

I would guess V2 but in truth, unless there are marking on the cams, you have no real way of knowing. V2 designed their cams for top end gains which makes sense when he talks of 4,000 loss. (Wheras Kent reprofiled cams for more midrange.)

Saying that though, peak power at 7750 is fairly low. Mine makes peak power at 7500 but holds this through to nearly 9,000.

IMHO dropping cams in will not see gains of 7-8 bhp unless the engine is flowed and ported accordingly. Certainly, i didn't see that much power from a combination of cams, flowed and ported head but I don't have any experience of V2 cams (and personally wouldn't as it makes sense to target mid range and torque on a twin rather than outright power).

OK, second hand info, so take it as it is:

I met a bloke a few years ago, who had V2 cams in his TRX, and IIRC correctly, no other engine mods. He told me he actually preferred the bike with the original cams. I think he said it was more rideable that way.

I don't mean to trash the cams, they are probably excellent. I suspect much of this is a matter of personal preference.

:D

It is not my intention to leave the engine standard.

1. cams and Keihins first
2. Rods, pistons, gas flow to follow in the winter months

That sounds sensible.

Phil

if I were you I'd save your money and not buy rods - aftermarket ones are made from 'unobtainium' and effing expensive.

KW cams arrived and it was as i suspected, they are practically brand new, they still have the coating on and are not scored in any way.

Have spoken to a couple of people that have gone down the avenue of v2 cams and they went back to the original as the hp gain was non existant without other major engine mods, these people raced their rex's and they stressed that the trx valve train is not up to the job if you intend on leaving the cams in for extended amounts of kms.
I've seen an article on v2 cams and what they claimed seemed to be rather optimistic
If it was me looking to fit them I'd do some serious research before pulling my engine to bits for no real gain!!!

Cheers, Mick
