hello
going to replace the standard madacam's for a 120/70/17 front and standard rear size

i have been looking at pirelli diablos at around £149 a pair is that about right ?

or is there others better value or cheaper,stickier etc
and do they have to be zr's ?

Suspect there are many threads on tyres if you use 'search'. Replacing the Macadams is a very good idea though. I've met better riders who thought they were fine, but I thought they felt horrible leant over.

Why 120/70 and not 120/60? Or is it me that's using the wrong front tyre size? (Probably...)

I love Diablos (used them on my 'blade) and have used Pirellis intermittently on the TRX throughout its life (since 1997) with good results each time (dragons, dragon corsas, dragon evos). For my money though, this is more of a track tyre for the TRX. You don't have the power of a hypersports bike, or even anything newer than a CBR600 F2. So for road use, even fast road use, I would go for a slightly more sedate, more road-biased tyre that's (i) cheaper and (ii) will last a bit longer. I found Sportec M1s for cheaper than Diablos or Dragons, and my set are very good dry and wet. Metzeler and Pirelli develop their stuff together (same ownership) and the tyres often feel very similar.

I've also found that the TRX, like many 90s sportsbikes, is very sensitive to its tyres. Choice will significantly affect steering (always a TRX issue!) and stability. So I would definitely do some searches and see what's worked for others. But for that reason also, I would stick with ZRs and the recommended ratio _unless_ you have specific info telling you another type will work!

i had been on the forum a while and from what i have read it seems to be a general agreement that a bigger front tyre is a better choice along with raising the front forks a bit to compensate , im happy to stick to the same size as i quite like the quick turn in the trx offers , was more curious from most of the previous threads that it seem to change the dynamic of the bike alot for the better , think im going to look up some of the ones you suggested and have a ponder as i doint dislike the madacams just think there a hard tyre and better suited to a different style of riding as yes i dont feel overly confident on them when tipped in

ZRs are the recommended rating in the owners manual so there is potential for insurance issues if there is a problem.

as for profile, many people like the 70 profiles, and this has been discussed here many times also. I'm running a 70 profile front, they work, I also never had any issues with the 60 profile front.

£149 for a pair of diablos sounds reasonable. I like those tyres, but have never run them on the TRX.

Do agree it's not a bad price - very good one if that's fitted! And good tyres, I just think that you can get slightly cheaper ones that will last longer and still knock the Macadams into a cocked proverbial.

As far as the insurance, while not disagreeing, I'd suggest that if you have a tyre rated to (e.g.) 140 mph instead of 170, your insurer can't really complain given that a stock TRX will never hit a genuine 140mph. I was more thinking about handling, given that a lower-rated version will often have a substantially different carcass construction, and thus an H-rated tyre will likely not handle like the same tyre in Z.

i got 11,400kms out of my first Rear Continental Road Attack and i use Conti Sport attack on the front, wouldnt bother trying others lol

having said that i have a mate who swears by Shinko tires, and he wouldnt have it any other way either!
