Just wanted to get people's thoughts on this.

I need a set of 320 discs for my YZF front end, and EBC's "race use only" discs are available significantly cheaper than the road versions. Before anyone states the obvious, we all know that sometimes things that aren't officially approved are safe, and sometimes they're unsafe. From what I can tell, it appears the difference with the race discs is that they use replaceable alloy rivets in addition to alloy carriers. It seems to me like this is probably why EBC states they're "race only" - accelerated wear and/or a higher chance that a rivet will fail/shatter over a steel part.

Does anyone have experience of using this product on the street, or have any insight as to how risky it would be to use them?

I would have thought if one pays attention to the condition of the discs, it shouldn't be too risky. But perhaps I'm not being cautious enough?

i have never used them ,,but if the unthinkable were to happen and you were involved in a crash it would be a get out for the insurance not to pay out ,,,that's if they found out ,,when i had my crash on my R1 the police checked the bike over they even checked the tyre pressures , and i would think anything that was marked NOT FOR ROAD USE they would suss that right away

are they narrow track discs?

I personally wouldn't for the sake of a few quid but ....

The saving's about £80, which isn't too shabby. Having measured my OEM TRX discs with verniers, I haven't even come close to using up the allowed wear in 27k miles of use, so if I buy the race discs and they only last 6 years, I wouldn't be complaining.

I don't think it's a disc thickness thing anyway. I think it's the rivets - they apparently even come with a spare set - and maybe a lighter carrier. I would have thought with the extra thermal load in race use, you wouldn't reduce the amount of actual disc, and I didn't see any mention of a thinner disc, which you would have thought would be highlighted.

Steve, good point about the insurance, although I don't think that they say "NOT FOR ROAD USE" in big letters.

£80 - that is a good saving

why don't you just email EBC and ask them?

I've ordered a set of the race-spec contours and will post more info once I've got them, for the edification of other TRX owners...

Did you get the pair from the states for 129£?? Would fit mine nice me thinks....

No, just from the EBC "official" partner at brakes4u - £180 shipped. Shipping from the states for a pair of dinner-plate sized discs would be painfully expensive!

Like I said, I will post some pics etc. once I've got them so we can see whether they have "not for road use" in big letters. Plus will weigh and check their thickness. By the time I have those, the YZF front end setup should be complete and ready for installation! Only thing I'm not sure about is when ARD racing will send me my nice shiny new YZF fender, but hopefully it will not be too much longer.

Just received yesterday a pair of 320mm EBC contour race discs. They feature gold carriers with spangly red buttons, a spare set of plain ally buttons and spring circlips, and look impressive! THey also come with dire warnings about being for race use, although they don't say "not for road use" on them.

I'll post some pics over the next couple of days, along with weights and disc thickness, for the benefit of people doing YZF conversions or building track bikes.

How you get those in there, 22mm bigger! Will the pads reach all the way?

YZF750R size discs... unless I'm very confused.

Maybe there's a little confusion over which front end you have fitted. Perhaps Killerwhale assumed you're running a standard TRX front end with 320mm discs fitted, whereas you are (as far as I understand) running a YZF750 front end.

Yes, I hope so!

It WILL be a YZf front end from about 22 January. My fender's supposed to arrive by the middle of next week along with my new brakes, at which point I'll have everything I need.

Oh, i thought YZF750 and R1 had the same size (from same time period). I have R1 2003 and it´s 298mm.
Tell us how they are on the road later mate!!
