I have the opportunity of getting a pair of 2002 r1 USD's for a cheapish price. Problem is, it does not have a top yolk and clip-ons. Will the standard TRX top yolk and clip-ons fit these forks?

No they won't, Trx stuff is 41mm and the R1 gear is 50mm. Browse ebay US and i'm sure you'll find what you need cheaply. Search for them under triple trees and top clamps. Shame about the conversion rate at the moment tho.

The R1 fork mod is a bit complex because you need to modify or have machined a new stem to fit the TRX headstock and R1 yokes. By far the easiest way is to use a set of YZF750 USD forks, then you can use the YZF750 top and bottom yokes, press out the YZF750 stem and press in the TRX850 stem and everything fits perfectly.

You can use the TRX stem in the R1 bottom yoke but you need a spacer under the top yoke to make it work....
YZF and R1 yokes have a different offset so you can't really mix 'n' match either unfortunately.

The R1 forks/yokes I tried had an aluminium stem which was a much bigger diameter to the steel TRX stem

What year R1 were you referring to? Just seeing as the stem size seems to have changed at some point.

Dunno what year they came off. I've still got the stem in the garage so can measure the diameter if anyone is interested

Mk.1 R1 (99ish) I guess... although I'm fairly sure Mk2 are also the same.
