I'm looking to get a repaint for the TRX (really fancy a retro tz white with red stripe on tank).

I'm definitely going to get it done by someone else as I've had a go a painting a bike (my last R6) and it was a complete disaster, I ended up with an almost biblical amount of orange peel and for some reason a really soft finish that marked as soon as you looked at it, in fact you could actually put indents in the paint with your nail

Now my question is, what do you think is a reasonable price to pay for a respray on a fairing, tank and seat unit? I would be looking at flat colours (no metalic, flake pearl etc) of white with a red stripe and black pin stripe?

The fairing is an after market fiberglass jobby with the inner face a fairly course matt. In your opinion would you paint the inside white to match the outside or a semi gloss / matt black ?

I was recently quoted £140 (no vat) to do a standard fairing: sand off old paint, do a couple of minor repairs, undercoat, paint in one colour and then lacquer. Seemed a fair price. He's a guy just starting up by himself round my way, but used to work for a painting firm years ago. Havn't had it done yet tho...

I'd do the inside black, but may cost more.

There are a few extra bits that I haven't bothered to include in the attached picture, like the tank stripe (on the top) and the 'pinstripes' on the front fairing. Based on Colin Edwards Valencia bike from a few years back.

if your going to get someone else to do it i would recommend getting it done in two pack , clear over base that's what i did to mine and although its not cheap its tuff ,, i cant tell you how much it will cost as i did it all myself but you need a ton of equipment to do a good job

That looks the nuts. I was going to go simpler than that though, no speed blocks on the side but a fairly wide stripe on top with blue or green number blocks.

What type of gun did you use (cost & quality wise?). I think my problem when I did it myself was to much paint to quickly and a poor quality gun. I've got a decent compressor (2 hp 50L tank 8.5 cfm) but the gun was an ebay special for about £15. Isn't 2 pack highly dangerous fumes wise?

Ah, I love the Valencia 2005 style. Too bad the corresponding shirts are too big though!
I have a scale model from the M1 above, inspired me for a white/red/black paintjob.
But I had my doubts about the fender being red. To my opinion it looks better if the fender has the same color as the rest, in that way it is part of the whole color scheme. See for yourself:

The paintjob you're looking at above, cost me almost €1.000
It was done by a professional in his own time. The white is pearl, black = metallic, so no easy colors.
I've heard that a paintjob in one color (white) can be done for €500. The black/red blocks can be added with a replica sticker set. (this is actually what I'm thinking of for my track-day-fairing).

The inner side is originally matt black. If its white, I think it will be glittering/shining in your face. Its like for the same reason dashboards of cars are always black.

the gun i use is a rand monet H2000, HVLP ,with a 1mm nozzle , and yes two pack is VERY bad for you if you do it every day but you wont be , but i have a proper two filter mask and good air extractor , i think my gun was £40 but that was a trade price,, have you got a water extractor on your compressor ? you must have one fitted , can you regulate the pressure at the gun ? on mine i need 3 to 4 bar

My original blue fairing is blue inside (not shiny though) Think I agree that the inside should be black though. I wonder whether i can fit a deeper mudgaurd to the standard forks?

I've got a water extractor but its a bit micky mouse. The gun I used previous had adjustment for fan and mixture (pressure related i think). I 've got a good quality respirator but no extraction facility. Do you do this type of thing for a living then? Do you want to do mine

no i dont do it for a living i would never make enough money and without an air extractor you will have loads of overspray , it would have cost me a lot less if somone else did my spraying but then i like to do stuff myself ,, and sorry i just dont have the time to do your spray job ,

Oh go on do mine for me I think I may have another go myself as I can see it ending up with me wanting both the standard and twin headlight fairing, tank, standard and race seats done (and full bellypan if I can get one).

What would be your no1 tip for getting a decent paint finish? I know that prep is king and am quite happy with my ability to get a good base for the paint. I think I may have access to a large inside space where I can do the painting and will have to live with a good over spay fog!
