Bafflectomy Take 2

I've always liked the shape of the standard TRX pipes - they follow the lines of the bike, are the right length and have no unsightly straps securing them to the bike. OK, they're heavy! but the main problem as most will agree is the stiffled exhaust note.

I wanted to retain the original look from the rear, so I used the excellent thread on the original Bafflectomy post and did a bit of additional modding........................

Original outlet pipes - the smaller one is the Japanese home market super quiet version

After taking off the 3 allen screws I used an air saw to cut out the back of the silencer. Then using long stillsons I carefully twisted the exit tube clock and anti clock until it freed itself from the middle support - it's just a tight fit!

The original centre pipe goes way down into the bowels of the silencer as seen in the pic.

I cut a 2mm thick piece of sheet metal with a 100mm hole saw and put a 35mm hole off centre to use as a new home for the shortened centre pipe and welded the shortened stub to the new plate.

Looking inside the cutout silencer you can see the 2 long tubes which take the exhaust gases from the front of the can, bounce the gas off the back wall, redirect the gases down the short tubes into the intermediate section (see in the sectioned silencer) and back out via the central pipe.

I fitted on the new end wall with the new backplate and shortened centre pipe with silicon sealer and rebolted the end cap on.

The noise was disapointing - too "tinny" .............took off the end cap and centre tube again and using 2 1/2 inch socket extensions connected together to get purchase, I bent the 2 long tubes towards the centre of the outlet hole - rebuilt the plate and end cap and tested again - RESULT :D a much deeper sound and much less tinny :D

The end result - doesn't sound as good as my titanium Akras on my 900 but at oly £10 for the big hole saw, a helluva lot cheaper and the original shape I was wanting :D
