Gents,

My bike rego is due and the seat on my bike is torn, So I figured it's the perfect time for a single seat conversion. I've been doing a fair bit of hunting around for info, and all I can see is that plenty of people have done it with mixed parts... R6 or R1 seems the most popular, but the year model varies... I guess my first question is: Will any model do? or will some work better then others? e.g. Will the '07 one on ebay do the trick?

Next question is this: How hard are they to install? I asked Kayla about hers and she said you cut off the pilion stuff, make a few tabs, drill a few holes... and I'm okay with that...

Then I found these pics on Quan-Time's thread




And realised when Kayla said cut off the pilion stuff, she meant the whole rear frame secion... I think I can bring myself to do that...

He's made a NEW rear frame section to mount it all up... Okay... That's in the too hard basket there... I have enough fab projects with my car... The bike is suppose to be the easy project...

Any advice would be helpful... Pics too if you've got them...

I posted some pics on the TRX freeforum http://trx850.freeforums.org/reg_success.php showing how I grafted a 2nd generation R1 rear end on my TRX. It is quite expensive and time consuming. I love the look, however the standard look has grown on me and standard gives you good underseat storage

Here's how much I cut off-



It's pretty painless (just a bit of cutting and drilling- no welding!) and still works with the standard plastics if you decide to go to a standard shape single seat. I don't take a pillion (spoils the ride!) so cutting it about didn't bother me I've got a 2003-2005 R6 seat unit on my bike.

If I was to do it properly (which I will do, eventually ), I'd cut the lower subframe rails right back to the main frame and weld some straight tubes in like Honk did on his bike.

edit- I think you only need to get into fabricating stuff if you want to keep the pillion seat.

I agree, those legs will touch down too easily.

Kayla's photo best explains what to do with modding the rear subframe - remove the pillion support brace, de-lug & offer your new seat unit up to see what else requires modding. But remember that keeping the rider seat frame 'standard' can mean other issues - alot of newer bikes (R1 included) have a much longer riders seat area so the seat pad, etc won't sit properly.

It sounds more complicated & is a much scarier prospect but i'd say completely remove the WHOLE tail section & weld mount lugs to accept whatever tail you decide to use (see mine or my wifes bike to see what i mean) It also means that in the event of an accident/other damage your rear sub-frame is removable, hence repairable rather than writing off a whole frame.

That seat unit looks nice, if a little 'rounded'. I've seen sharper, more standard shaped ones.

hey, dont knock the green-plastic-seat mod until you try it.. Comfiest thing you will ever try. Specially when drunk.

heh. Depends on what you want, but you can fit ANYTHING on you want, its just how creative you are, or what you personally think is "good".

As for my tail section, its changed. Same R1 tail, but the whole end is been refab'd. That was more or less a mockup to make sure everything fitted properly. Basically it doesnt look like crap anymore

Back on topic though, I think the problem with fitting any alternative seat unit is the lower subframe rails. They really need to be altered for any non-TRX modification to look good. Honk's bike is a good example- he cut and shut the subframe to make it as unobtrusive as possible.

Correct, once you have the full position / angles you want. You REALLY need to use it as a jig to make a "proper" fixture else it looks like ass.. Sorta what mine looks like in the "version 1" setup.

Theres plenty of ways to do it, but yeah, if you DO do it, at least do it properly.
