Job 1: New tyres to replace the Avon Storm STs finished off in the Pyrenees in September

I went for a set of Maxxis Supermaxx Sports in the end. More focussed towards fast road/trackdays given that that will be the focus this year, less so long distance touring as per 2010. Not scrubbed them in as yet so can't comment on their performance...yet! Not bad at £159 fitted at my local ProTyre.

Job 2: Valve clearance check/re-shim (18.8K miles showing).

Fairing off, tank off, airbox off, rad off, rocker box off and in with the feeler guages. All zorst valves within tolerance ranges - tick. 3 of the 6 inlet valves weren't quite within tolerance, including one that had zero clearance! Swapping the shims around allowed a measurement to be achieved on the zero tolerance valve and a suitable shim size established. So 3 OE shims (171, 174 and 176) will be needed and a new rocker box gasket and the job will be jobbed. Bike should run noticeably smoother given the 0 clearance on one of the valves. Carbs will then be balanced to the newly shimmed motor. Engine internals look really clean, no sludge present so it looks like the previous owner followed regular oil and filter changes like I have been doing, thankfully!

Job 3: Re-pack and stubby race cans.

They are a bit too rorty now with the baffles out so need repacking. Be a shame not to stunt their growth by about 5 inches whilst the ends are off. Friend of a friend used some place locally to where the bike is being spannered to lazer cut his cans so they'll be taken there, cut, then repacked and rerivetted with stainless pop rivets.

Job 4: Front fork overhaul, fit Ohlins springs.

The bike came with a set of Ohlins springs that had never been fitted. Forks will be drained (probably of the original oil they left Japan with), cleaned/serviced and refilled with racing fork oil (10wt) and the air gaps played with to find a nice base setting for me, the springs and their intended use (thanks for the various pointers from various peeps on this forum).

Job 5: Fit 2010 R6 rear shock and 'Kayla' adaptor. Set up.

Once I'm happy with the front set up I'm going to address the rear end. I'm going to paint the adaptor black before fitting it. I've established the base settings for the R6 shock so I have somewhere to work from (listed elsewhere on the forum for others taking this rear shock route).

Job 6: Rearward vision overhaul!

Got a set of SV1000 mirrors that need their mounting holes enlarged slightly before fitting to the bike....once the fairings re-fitted!

That will probably be my lot in readiness for the next dry line(s) appearing.

Just had my insurance renewal from Carol Nashe. A not unreasonable £135 fully comp, protected NCB and UK/European recovery to boot. Leaves me a little left in the TRX modding/running costs pot for a new chain and sprocket set. Running 16/39 currently but might go to 17/42 or 16/43 for some added pep!

Regarding your valve adjustment - has the bike been a reluctant starter?

Spookily enuf my TRX is actually being fettled in Knowle which I suspect isn't more than 5-minutes from you! One of my biking circle is a top mechanic and I entrust all my more invovled spannering jobs to him to undertake. He's very methodical and thorough and has just gone self employed so I'm happy to put some money in his pocket knowing I'll get a good job and I'm helping him get going too. Oh and he normally owes me money for something anyway so payment is often in the form of spanner work!

Bike has been starting well enough, not noticed any issues although I suspect given the valve clearances or lack of that it'll be a different motor when I get it back. I'm hopefully collecting it this weekend at some point.

PM me your contact details and I may well swing by when I collect the bike or sometie soon...partly cos I'd like to get a look see at your NWS bike(s) too. There was a yellow one owned by a local bike shop owner but thats the only one I've ever seen and that was a while back now.

OK. Perhasp I'll go 16/42 in that case then. I was having a little look online and 39/40/42 seemed to be the rear sprocket option and 16/17 for the front. Might need to get on the phone to buiy anything else I supect.

If the yellow bike you refered to was yellow & white it was my bike - if it was all yellow it was my wifes bike, these are the only two surviving NWS bikes - mine was the original i had made 14 years ago, the other was commissioned by a bike shop after MCN ran a feature on mine. There was a 3rd frame made but was written off many years ago.

I recall seeing a yellow and white (now you mention it) NWS framed and highly fettled TRX for sale at Fraser's Motorbikes in Gloucester and I thought the previous owner had something to do with another smaller motorbike shop elsewhere in Gloucester, name escapes me...but I could be wrong. Must be the same bike. Stunning looking bit of kit...I am envious!

Yep, that was my bike - i remember them claiming it was built by Yamaha technicians - yeah right, me in my garage & Craig Taylors workshop!! It looks very different now (pics will be on line by new year)

Previous owner was a good friend of mine who worked at Carnell in Brum.
