My winter project

Hi All

It's been a quiet day so I thought I would let the world know about my winter project, and progress so far.

It all started with a 98 TRX850 bought last May for a summer of fun on the B roads of britain.



Then started sourcing the parts I wanted for an upgrade





Then a visit to a local engineering firm to help with a USD front end (04 R1)


Custom sprocket cover made by my bro as a Xmas present (based on my design)


Then the new year arrived and changes to the frame and seat


So currently the dry build looks like this..




Still on the to do list is
Booked in with MCT Suspension - New rear shock - re spring / valve R1 forks to suit.
New exhaust fabrication
Fit new rear brake line and test ride bike to check all works OK before the strip to bits for :

Powdercoating
Paint
Clean / polish
Re-assemble before the summer is over.

Very nice, will have to get on with my mods now it's getting a bit warmer - Is the seat an R6? looks the part IMHO

Chain is back on -as well as Number plate.

When the exhaust is fabricated its coolant / water top up - rear brake line - charge battery and (hopefully) fire her up and test ride.

Yes it is 04 R6 seat and seat unit / undertray with LED lights.

OK update time

Visit to MC Technics was interesting as he checked out the R1 forks and rates them as spot on for the TRX no changes to springs or a re-valve required!

To quote Darren "the forks feel better in the TRX than they would in an R1" - he would normally go for lighter springs in an R1 but because of the extra weight of the TRX the balance is really good. Re gased the rear shock - lazer aligned the wheels (they were way out) set up static sag and said it should be a good ride on the road.

Dropped the bike back to RS fabricatrions the same day (check out their very good web site for an idea of the work they can do - not cheap but 1st class work).

My dad fixed a small wiring problem and she fired up no problem, 1st test ride found slightly loose head bearings and the side stand fouls the gear change with the robbi moto rear sets, so have been working on an adaptor plate to get the required clearance.

Adjusted the head bearings and removed side stand for a quick ride, and she's great - all good from the dry build - next steps enjoy for a few weeks then - dismantle for Powdercoating Paint clean and final assembly.

Hmmm not much ground clearance under that exhaust system once off the paddock stand is there?

Firstly - great work, looking good & very well executed. Mince has a point tho - the exhaust is way too low at the intersection & will probably ground. Should be much closer (around 6mm) to the main frame subframe & sweeping tight under the rearsets, looks like you've lost around 2" of clearance. Might be worth sorting while it's still 'work in progress' ?

It's a lovely looking bike You should be able to sort the exhaust by tightening up the bend at the head a little, or putting another slight bend midway between the first and second bends. It's still gorgeous though!

I think it just needs 1cm of pipe chopped right after the header clamp on the cylinders. It should bring the whole system up and enough to cure it.

But that's just me...

I think the hanger just needs to be shortened - this will bring it up under the rearsets more and raise it under the engine to give greater ground clearance

Hi All

Thanks for the feedback - I've been on a 50 mile ride through twisty roads, over speed humps & up driveway kerbs with no clearance issues at all. I've got 4.5 inch clearance only 0.5 diff to my race bike.

schmiffee's idea of shortening the hanger to raise the system would work fine, but after no problems during the ride - as they say "if it aint broke - dont fit it"

Got a question for you all though.

Given the time and effort put in, should I go for an engine re-build got 31,000 miles on the clock and she runs sweet, but as I'm going to all the effort to make her look like new should I re-fresh the engine, or is that asking for trouble?
