AlexTRX, and I were talking on Friday about TRX`s and whats next after my cafe racer. I have looked in the mirror and realised that if I stop fiddling around with bikes I will become an alcoholic, so in saying that I need some input.
1. When does a TRX not become a TRX?
2. does a front end , swing arm, then turning the bike into a street fighter with different seat, bars ect exclude it from being branded a TRX???
3.Are street fighters regarded as bottom dwellers in the TRX world?
4. would you sit me at another table if I bought a good low klm TRX and turn it into a street fighter?
5. Is everyone over the streetfighter scene??

IMPROVING or PERSONALISING a bike is never over as far as I`m concerned and as for the streetfighter scene being over just type `streetfighter` into an Ebay search and see how many pages you`ll get?
Biking snobbery is something I deplore personally, these muppets that even put period rubber brake hoses on their concours rebuilds, WTF, are they not going to ride the thing?
I can admire standard, and good ownership, cleaning skills etc but mods shake my tree, engineering results, the radical, the vision, the skill and TIME put in.
Chris`s NWS framed 870 is testament to what CAN be done and it`s still very much a TRX.
I remember a very interesting conversation I had with a 77 year old Vincent (series C) rider at Box Hill in 2008.
This old fella could quote part numbers, tolerances, run-out, shim thicknesses and the like, his Vincent was an extension of him and unlike his son on a Firestorm this old guy was interesting.
Told me all about his many crank builds over the years, he`s been the owner from new, the engineering solutions he has devised to help even out some of vincents design flaws.
So, a standard series C would not be the bike he would want but his Vincent was most certainly the only bike he ever wants to own. Plus he`s even put something in place to have it given to a museum when it outlives him.
I could have talked to that old fella all day but he was itching to get back in the saddle after his cuppa so I wished him many more happy miles on his old girl and let him get on with it.

To be a TRX the bike needs the original TRX engine and frame, thats all, nothing else.

Everything else is bolt-ons, so can be changed and you'll still have a TRX.

+1, and 3/4 of the frame (for R1 or whatever rear ends), or in the case of NWS, a very shiny, gorgeous, all new replica frame that is in the same format. Then theres the Bakker replicas as well. Its still a TRX and loved by its owner no matter what you do to it, provided it started life on Yamaha's production line as a TRX who cares, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I Think it needs trx engine, original or special frame , half fairing and its still a trx if you use Later model yamaha parts.(forks,seat units etc). I have always wanted to put the trx engine in a fzr400rrsp but not sure you could call it a trx then.

I come across the ''yeah, but, it ain't a TRX no more'' kinda conversation quite alot & i admit i might over defend a little because in my mind it means that those very people are missing the point entirely. Whilst the TRX is a very 'competent' bike in stock trim it isn't without flaws & rushed or built to a budget issues, this makes it a blank canvas for specials builders who realise that there's more potential in there to be had. In my mind my bike is still very much a TRX but one that works in every way i want it to & so much more than when it left the factory - if a mod doesn't work or improve over stock it doesn't stay on, simple!

I'm all for people being individual with their builds, as long as the mods are an improvement, who actually cares if it's faithful to the original? As for styling (fightering,etc) that is just down to the individual - we don't all have the same haircut do we?

I dont think there any parts at all on a TRX that could not be individually changed, and for the bike still to be a TRX, I think there are several TDM engine swaps, ok not the most radical of swaps, but still a non original motor and I am sure there will be some truly wild swaps that have been done.
A few special frame bikes around this in its self does not in my opinion change the identity of the bike, NWS and Wendles bikes are lovly examples of Trx's but in my mind this is where it start to get a bit iffy. Now iffy is not a bad thing. It might be the best thing to ever happen to a bike. It just means the bike has a bit of an identity crisis. Im all up for the modding and upgrading of bikes (and cars for that matter) but also like to see a totally standard vehicle too, a freind of mine had a large car and bike collection with a trump bonny in his living room alongside a villiers or something, the trump had never even had gas in the tank! the villiers was astounding, both bikes totally original. Same guy, as I walked into his garage was assaulting his 1920 somthing mint Rolls Royce with a Black and Decker drill, he was putting a cheapo aftermarket mirror on the door, He says " If I cant see properly I wouldn't ever drive it, so it gets a mirror"
So I think we all do it to make our bikes better or moren usable or to make them out own, and if the owner still feels its a trx then it is. but it helps if it says TRX on the log book!

you could have a tdm motor in an alloy lattice frame with an r1 front and yzf rear ...you couldnt advise it to be a TRX...but you sure could say it USED TO BE one..!! heh heh- eh ?

Tank and motor configuration is all it needs in my opinion.
