Post by Yami » Wed Nov 13, 2013 9:21 am

I got my hands on a spare engine and is trying to find out what yearmodel it can be.
Do you guys know or can make a guess from my engine number?
4UN-004652.
Thanks.

Thanks Cobba. But not really what I was looking for.
I´m trying to find out about the engine number 004652 what yearmodel it belongs to, if it can be done.
For example, did they produce the first 1000 engines (001000) for the 1995 japan model,
next 1000 (002000) for the 1996 yearmodel and so on. Hope this makes sense what I look for.
If you guys with original bikes know what engine number you have and yearmodel, we might get a hint from that

Judging by the number, I would say it's a 96. Mine's a 98 with engine number 15000 something. I also believe that black engined Japanese models didn't have engine numbers, only frame numbers.

Why do you want to find the year of it?

Yours a -98 and have a number over 15000, god damn, did they make so many of them.
My TRX850 is an early -96 with engine number 000115. I had hoped this spare one would be at least a 97.
But making that high numbers already in 98 mine is probably a late -96.

Checked the valve clearances which was very positive though. All of them was spot on by the book. :)

Early models upto 87 suffered from softer valve seats that chewed out and closed clearences around 50,000KM. (not valve stretch as some have believed)
If it's a spare it may be worth your while checking clearences or cleaning the head up and reseating the valves.

Mine was first registered in March 1997 and is engine No. 4UN 005533.

Don't know if that helps at all.

My original motor was a 7/1996....with engine numbered 4XG000455
Black with black frame.

Now motor is from a 04/1999 build with motor number 4XG002042
Hope that helps.

Our numbers are lower than Sanddune51...maybe we had the early motors.

Thanks for the info. :)
It seemes to be a bit more clear now.
Looks like they have production numbers by the region codes according to your info here.

4UN I guess had made around 5000 bikes in 1996 and just about the same amount in 97 and 98.
That would line up with your numbers drix.

4XG seemes not to have that high production through the years.

c'est classé par numéro, partant de l'idée que si vous avez un numéro ancien pour une date d'immat récente c'est qu'elle n'a pas été immatriculée tout de suite .

Generally, it's user name, date of first time put on the road and frame no. (Generally close to the engine no also) and in cases, engine no as well. This should give you a rough idea ;)

Rule of thumb is the smaller the older the bike. Date put on the road is not the ideal indicator as some TRXs could've been sitting in a dealers for some time...

Mine is a grey import from Japan to Australia where it is now, Black engine on white frame+wheels.
Engine number is 4NX - 001734, I'm pretty sure its a 95 or 96

EDIT: Just did some checking and mine is most definitely a 96
