The seat area of the early inlets seems prone to hammer out of shape/ is prone to recession. The seat in the cylinder head remains unaffected in my experience.
Just check both seats very carefully, preferably with a magnifying glass, as the damage may not immiediately be apparent.
Sorry that all this is off topic.

Re: oil consumption - critical point?
No it's incorrect. There was no problem with my '96 head & seats, just the inlet valves. Hence the different part numbers for the later upspecced inlets but unchanged part numbers for the head itself. The fat that I have done as many klm's after the rebuild as before on the same head and still have plenty of adjustment scope backs this up. It also confirms that the stem seals are a weak point.cobbadiggabuddyblooo wrote:I can see now the difference in part numbers from 96 to 97 being revised on the 2 inlet valves .
the final 2 numbers being -00 for 96 and the revised with -01 for 97 and onwards and continuing with the same revised number on the TDM 900 models.
I stand corrected..
So the 95-96 model valve head is the problem causing all the dramas..and this in itself can ultimately cause damage to the seat.
Is this correct Mark??
Now with 140,000 on the clocks, X-mas tree didn't kill it & I still love it.
