Re: Whoops clang !!
From the images posted to date this looks like fatigue failure to me; any chance you could post a couple of really clear macro images of the fracture face?
I cannot claim to be a metallurgist but am very interested in failure analysis generally (especially if it is a TRX component); non metallic material testing and failure in the oil and gas industry (polymers and elastomers) is my field of work.
With such a complex mechanical loading (tensile, compressive and bending), con rod failure can be a challenging thing to diagnose reliably.
My feeling is that if it was detonating badly enough to cause this failure through compressive overload, the motor would have been running like a bag of s@#t for a long time. I would question whether (BS standard approved) pump fuel quality can vary widely enough in its octane rating to cause (stock) modern motors to pre-ignite to a great extent.
I look fwd to more pics with anticipation.

Aaaarh, what the hell .... that the rod broke is more a matter of curiosity, to us passionate devotees of the TRX beast .... more to the point, you fixed the old girl up and kept her..... top stuff......

Hello,
Had a word with the boy and said about over revving - He said there is no point, as the power is lower down.
I said, how do you know that
you must have revved it hard to find out
He called me a silly old fool ( or words to that effect)

Been following this one for the end result, with Dandywarhol and likely the reason we haven't seen one of these detonations before is that we know there isn't any reason to over rev already.
Ride it like its stolen mentality check maybe.

Detonation would also show up as damage to the piston crown.
Serious question masterbill - did junior have a 4 cyl bike previously?

Hello,
Teacher - used to teach engineering at a Tech college.
Junior had a 750 GSXR K5 thingy before.
Mind you he's used my tuned RD350 F2 and if something is going to blow I would have put my money on that

Aye, only a teacher would use that kind of tactic to weedle out the truth - used it myself many a timemasterbill wrote:Hello,

Re: Whoops clang !!
Doesn't sound too far fetched, I've never hit the redline on the road & you can certainly feel the power taper off. In fact, I've lowered my Rev limit with the TCIP4 & still haven't hit it!masterbill wrote:Hello,

Let us know if you get any definitive info on it, I've never seen that kind of thing on a TRX before...

I reckon we ought to asking the so&so that stole it... If there was any 'rod stretching, I'll bet it was then.

I have some revealing pics from under the microscope and will post these when I get time to stick em on Photobucket, hopefully one night this week.
