Pad Cover Important?

Hi Everyone,

The pad cover from my rear caliper has dropped off somewhere. I was wondering if it was important (maybe to keep gunk out) or if it was more of an "aesthetic" piece...

you can survive without it.. But its actually to stop your "gunk" aswell as rocks and small debris.. If that gets in there.. very bad news.
