Why not have both lights on low beam and both on high beam? Have heard of people having a crash because the car driver was on the side of the bike that had the light off and plowed them over.

legalities basically.. Ive devised a way to have a special "hidden" switch that will allow me to still have both low when i choose, so a simple flick of a switch, BAM back to only one which makes it legal..

its a bit bullshit, but its the way the law works.. need to stay away from the boys in blue really.

Same in the UK - unless the lights share the same glass then only one can operate on main beam. I was told that this was to stop road users thinking that the lights were on a car a long way away

QT - the LED indicators will flash fast unless you user resistors or replace the blinker unit.

Except that this is not a legal issue in the UK, bikes must be designed and sold with only one dipped headlight working, but there is no legal issue with modifying it post sale or using it that way.

Not being a old fart or anything but there's not alot you can do to a bike and still be legal, and there's not much left on your bike that hasn't been changed and your worried about the lights

yer its weird.. After talking to some legal type ppl, with car mods, the legal paper work is as long as a dunny roll, theres just HEAPS of "what you can and cant do" things.. V8 in this car, turbo in that car, chop the top, brakes, etc.., theres OODLES of it..

after checking the bike one... wanna know how it goes ? its one page (for SA anyway) and there is only one actual paragraph thats applicable.. "if it came stock or as a factory option and not dealer option, its legal, else its illegal"

Now saying that, you CAN apply for a permit, but you need to get engineers certs saying its safe / worthy.. and to even get face time with an approved engineer is $150 to walk in the door, like $100 per hr consult (so do HEAPS of homework / maths before you see him) then its almost 1k for the final sign off.. so if you want to change your disk brakes from 300mm to 330mm.. yer.. do the figgures on that !!

with that said, the ammount of times mates (never me.. yet,, touch wood) have been pulled over, cops said "hey mate. yadda yadda" and they reply "err.. its stock actually, well, its one of factory bolt-ons / polished it / its stock just been chromed / painted" and they believe you.. cos they seriously dont know.. whcih is a bonus really ;)

Wait and see how well i can bullshit a cop... as it is many ppl say i have a R1 when they see the pics.. so hopefully i can get away with it :)

'tis a bit more complex and a bit more simple than that.

Vehicle type approval and compliance ia a federal gov function not state gov function but policing roadworthyness ( is that a word?) is a state policing issue.

With unification of the road rules in the late 80's/early 90's- the one where we can incur speeding points from another state and records cross borders- state governments were required to adopt wholesale federal transport legislation and enforce it as if their own. In practice this does not happen. For example fitting a roo bar to the front of a car, fitting aftermarket spoilers to bootlids, fitting trays to utes that exceed the width of the cab, fitting and using foglights when the headlights are in use are some of the regular things we see on the road that render the vehicle unroadworthy by federal leglislation yet local filth turn a blind eye. Even the way unmarked speed cameras are set up in SA contravenes federal standards but the legal world could'nt give a toss.

Where am I going with this? Your new intergrated tail light is not legal under federal ADRs as the distance out from the centreline to the light face of the indicator is insufficient ( it will be marked with ADR approval if it is legal BTW). If you feel safe from the filth with this tail light then wiring up the headlight for both on in low beam is not a problem, especially as bikes like the VFR800 VTEC, Yamaha FZ1 Fazer are ADR type approved for two dipped beams... see http://www.bikepoint.com.au/portal/alia ... fault.aspx for photo

This single dipped light is a fashion statement adopted by the Japanese to mimic the world endurance bikes that run a Suzuka in the 8 hour, and as they build for all markets with as little change as possible thats what we get. If they present a bike for ADR approval with a single dipped beam and its approved then thats how you have to run it.. end of story. If a bike is approved with two dipped like the FZ1, or the police spec BMW R1200RT's the filth uses then thats how you must run them.

As for a TRX with a cut and shut swingarm, R1 forks and body work, off road pipes, non-approved tail light.... etc why are you only bothered about the 'kin headlights? Be happy that you live in SA so you dont have to suffer annual inspections like I did when I lived in Sydney, or like our pommy bretherin do with the MOT test. I had to remove my aftermarket suspension drag links to pass inspection in Sydney once as an altered ride height is a no-no. Thank god the c#@t didnt spot the spring and damper mods....

Get off the Coopers Green and back on to the Red or even Vintage my friend, and boldly go where no TRX has been before....

Few things to note.
1: the gear lever obviously hasnt get the push rod connected yet, ill attach that soon.
2: brake is far from finished, but you get the main idea
3: yes it looks chunky, but its actually very close to the original sizes
4: ive not finished the "swiss cheese adjustment plate" yet.. thats just a template to get an idea where i want things.. gives me WAY more movement than ill even need, but should be of
5: need to finish the brake side heal protector and attach the brake piston to it. Shouldnt be too complex but you never know with these things.
6: finish it whenever..

OK.. been quiet for a while, But ill make a quick update now. (pics will come tomorrow).

Ive got my new rear view mirrors, flush front indicators and headlight mounted indicators. Pics will show what i mean.

Sorted the electrics and bike is a runner.. MAN took a while to turn over in cold weather, with no exhaust.. but it fired up none the less.. Also noticed that i got some slight flame action... means the bike is running off (timing and mixture) so its something to look into after im up and running.

Swingarm is back in and sorted.. Fits fine but clearance is tight around the shock but still has movement which is good.

Looks... err.. "empty" under the tail and between the wheel.. As its all clean and nothing is there.. Still need to put the exhaust on, but thats nothing i cant handle :)

The modified suspension knuckle didnt work.. >_< Ive got to make further mods (basically undo what i did, and redo it properly to fit). Summary is this:

Because im using a R1 rear spring now its an eye connection rather than a saddle.. best way to describe it is .. notice the bottom of the TRX shock, where it mounts to the banana looking thing, it has a saddle on it to mount.. A R1 is an eyelet, and 30mm shorter.. so i needed to make something to suit.. i was close, but forgot to compensate for the 72mm i chopped out of the swingarm, thus it is in totally the wrong position.. such is life. Its just the way its mounted..

Saying all this, i copied tz250w's adjustable dogbone idea.. Mine is slightly different looking, but exactually same concept.. Here is his original work
Image

you can also see that the bottom of the TRX shock is "saddle" style rather than eyelet.. Anyway.. you get the idea.

Ive mounted the front fairing 90% and its all on.. I need to make a bracket of some flavor to get it all sorted and secure, but its on, solid and most of the brackets are welded / resprayed now.. Just one small thing i gotta do.

Rear pillion seat cover is a bitch.. Still need to get that sorted.. I keep looking at it and keep ignoring it.. I guess ill do something about it this week.

My main aim is to have it "ridable" by this weekend. I need a new chain joiner (lost the little locking clip and damned if i can find an exact replacement at work.. its a "non standard" size.. bastard parallel import laws.. have to get a genuine thing from yam dealer.. prolly cost heaps..

I also need to sort out some kind of under fairing cover.. the part that will cover between the bottom of the ducktail fairing and the top of the rear wheel.. Its all exposed currently. And i want to get some sort of fitted plastic to screw in there.. Im prolly jsut gonna get some perspex sheet, attack it with my trusty jigsaw and drill.. put it all together.. shouldnt be that hard really.

I'd highly suggest forget about looking for it and get a mash on (crimp, peen, whatever...) type. I've seen too many clip links come apart over the years, some with nasty results.
