Seat lock ....
Ok - I've been a complete tw@t and have done what I feared most...
As part of my TRX 'upgrade', I got bored with trying to get the R1 top yoke to fit properly, so I just de-locked it and ditched the ignition switch.
Now however, I find myself somewhat embarassed by having mislaid the key. Not a monstrous problem, until I need to either get into the seat or - as is the case tomorrow - get fuel into the tank. I'll probably end up swapping tank caps as I have another tank in the garage anyway, but does anyone have any idea how to get the seat pad off without cocking up the mechanism ??
Any helpful comments appreciated as I've told myself I'm a dickhead enough times already...

I did it - but worse!!! (yeah I know - that's coz I'm blonde).
I put my key in my bag, stuck the bag in the tail, then clicked the seat shut
When I did it I owned up on here and posted a thread on how to get the seat off without the key should any other idiot need to know
I'll go find the thread

Mmmmm must've been on Dugy's (now dead) site.
Basically (and excuse the non-technical description) .... there are two nuts holding the front of the seat to the brackets. They are about ½" in from the edges (if your pillion seat is one with the strap then they hold that to the seat too).. They're quite small - hopefully you've got just enough of a gap to squeeze a small (size 10 or 11) spanner in under the front of the seat, undo the nuts completely and the bracket should detach from the seat meaning you can wiggle the seat off.
Worked on mine (with the help of a 90yo mechanic who had a little workshop out the back of the petrol station when I did mine - thank god, I was about 30miles from nowhere!!).
If this works it will go down in history as the first time I've managed to answer a "technical" question

If you don't want to trash the cap completely, you could try just driving a large, flat bladed screwdriver (look for one about the same width as the key slot) into the lock barrel, (give it a tap with a hammer if you have to, but don't drive it through the bottom of the lock). Then once it's in about as far as your key would normally go, attach a good sized pair of vice grips to the handle of the screwdriver and turn it in the normal direction that you would to unlock the cap. It probably won't go easily, but it will turn. You'll just be left with a lock barrel that has all of the brass pins inside it broken off, but it should still be useable if you have to. Could look a bit suspect if you pull out a screwdriver to open the fuel cap at a service station to fill up though.......

Hi Greg!
For removing the pillion seat without the key you "just" have to pull the Bowden cable which unlocks the seat - there was a guy at the German forum who did it (you're not alone ...)
If memory don't deceives me, you should be able to get hold of the Bowden cable despite nothing being dismantled ...
Good luck!

Thanks for both those - Ferret, I'll hold on til I'm sure I'm not going to get the key back - the way my luck's running at the moment it's absolutely inevitable that as soon as I f*ck the lock up I'll find the key in some obscure place that Sue though would be safe lol..
Here's how my luck was last week... Picked up a brand new pair of ubercool sunnies
from SpecSavers on Wednesday last (yeah yeah - I know I shoulda gone to VisionExpress!), wore them on the last sunny day we've had which was Friday, stopped at Poole Motorcycles to get a speedo cable for the TRX and left them on the counter there... Didn't pick them up on the way out but they'd been lifted by the time I went back. I know it's not as bad as the luggage that was nicked in Aus, but it pissed me off none the less - even more as they were prescription lenses and anyone with 20-20 vision would probably drive into the nearest tree wearing them!

Anyone know how to get at the cable with the seat on then (as mentioned above)? I replaced my ignition and petrol cap locks, having lost the keys years ago (bike in storage), but didn't do the seat lock.
Alternatively, what are those security bolts on the seat lock? I tried my TX security type drivers and wondered why it didn't work, until I clocked that the Yamaha bolts have 6 splines and not 5. Or perhaps it's my 5-spline TX drivers that are weird?

I thought proper Torx were 6 spline.
The seat lock surround on my bike is attached by 2 M6 hex head bolts and 2 Philips head screws hold the assembly to the frame (?). The screws are pretty much hidden behind the bodywork.
Looks like you can undo the 2 bolts in situ which, with a lot of wiggling, could allow access to the cable on the back of the lock. Not certain though as I've never tried it.

The seat lock mechanism / key is secured from the factory with security torx.
these are standard 6 spline torx with a raised piece in the middle to stop you using a standard torx drivers. security drivers have hollowshafts to allow them to fit over the raised piece.
anyone who has got these off (usually by butchering the bolts as they don't have the proper drivers) tends to replace them with standard bolts.
Personally, I still have the security torx on mine.
