Misfires and baffles

Post by Jak » Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:53 pm

HELP!!!!!!!

I've got Scorpion cans on and up until the MOT last month the baffles were happily sat in a carrier bag on a shelf in the garage - it was loud (earplugs essential) but traffic was a doddle, like the parting of the waves  I put them back in for the MOT and the bike ran so much better I didn't bother taking them out again (it used to bog down a bit around 3-4k revs).

Tonight I took mini-me down to our local bike meet - well we got half way there.

Bike ran fine when I started it, coughed a bit going through town and then it got worse. By the time we were 5 miles down the road it was misfiring and when I stopped at lights it'd cut out as I pulled away. Started fine just ran bad - oh yeah and on starting there was loads of smoke so I pulled over and spotted that one of the baffles has lost it's screw and is just popping in and out - to my (seriously non-mechanical) eye it seemed related.

Abandoned our night out and turned round - after a while I sussed that keeping the revs at about 3k I could keep the bike fairly smooth. Mini-me was in tears half the way home - the pillion seat is not the place to be when it's running like that!

So - the question - is it the loose baffle that's causing the misfire?

Please tell me it is - I don't know if I can get anyone to look at the bike before Saturday :(

Why not remove both the baffles and see if it runs any better?

Don´t know if i´m that much better that you but my first thought where...

Could it be that your bike was spot on A/F ratio with the cans opened up....but you thought that the annoying hole 3-4k revs where filled when dB killers in there.....
And it got really fat running with the killers in!?

Did you check your sparkies??

@ martin
That's the plan tomorrow morning - unless I have to go and sweet-talk the mechanic.

@ KW
It's been running better with the baffles in though. Without the baffles I kept being told the bike smelt of fuel :? Spark plugs were changed not that long ago - and I had to get someone else to do it so if its likely to be them I'll have to try and book it into the garage :(

 @ Shifty

Plugs and air filter were changed 6 months back I think, fuel is from normal garage.

It's running very rich - has done for ages - and I've read a few times on here about the emulsion tubes and thought oh dear that sounds like my bike :( One of the things I thought I could try and do myself sometime, hopefully, maybe.

Thing is though - it was running absolutely fine the other day - this is a tonight thing, which is why I think it's the loose baffle causing the problem.

its fairly rare that an exhaust will ruin fuel / o2 mixture, thus, it prolly wont make it smell rich.

BUT having a stuffed exhaust you CAN create extra pre-load on your jets / tubes in the carbie. Because the carb relies on vacuum to run efficiently, thus, too much resistance trying to get out will (so ive heard, ive yet to see it proven in reality). Ever seen a car backfire thru the carbie ? i have. Its usually a broken EGR valve or a rusted out muffler box.

I spose the 1st thing to look at is fixing your exhaust, or putting on your old one, if the problem is still there, id strongly suggest getting your carbie looked at. Doubt its the spark plugs. spark plugs drop power, not make it "shunty".. thats the fuel going in for a bit, then not.. thus, power is very bubbly.

Hope you get it fixed soon

PS: remember the old saying.. If it has tits, wheels or buttons, your gonna have issues.

you get 2/3.. wow.. sux to be you ;)

hi jak. am thinking along the same line as slow codger, packing in baffle has come loose. had a old 84 gpz 1100 years ago that did the same thing, coughed and spluttered and stopped in about a 5 k ride. found a piece of wire on side of road and pulled it out, took a hour, started bike, very loud but ran great. hope this helps. cheers BRUSH.

rich for ages, smell of fuel - emulsion tubes for sure, as said above. cheap and easy to to fix.

For you maybe - remember my level of mechanical skill is only slightly higher than none

Baffles are out and I'm gonna take it for a run in a mo to see if that's helped. If it hasn't I'll be calling in at the garage :?

Ok, I agree with the over-fueling suggestions, but just another simple thing: also check your choke is in, and if it is, check it's connected to the carbs and working ok.
