Phatty ...

Count to ten (not that you probably haven't already) before doing anything drastic...

You've made a cracking bike there, and IMVHO it would be a shape to see it broken up... Why not just leave the rolling chassis in a corner of your garage until a motor turns up - one will eventually!

Or - here's a thought - the mechanic at the garage I got mine from (it was a 2 bike basket case originally) reckoned that an R6 motor might fit with a bit of work... now I have absolutely no idea about that (before anyone decides to call me a tw@t) but with what you've already done I guess you've got the ability to do something along those lines ...

Just my 5 eggs

It's just sat there, taking up space. just like the other TRX is out in the car port.

My main interest is cars, i have a huge project on the go at the moment that need my time and money so another bike conversion just isn't on the cards.

I've weighed it all up and come to the conclusion that it's a #1500 bike, and always will be a #1500 bike. I could spend #500 on another motor, it's still a #1500 bike. or i could sell of the bits for #1500 (either way, I still #1500).

the other trx is practically worthless as it stands, but with a motor would be worth #800 at least. so for financial sense that's what I'm going to do, build up and engine out of the bits i have and either use that for the remainder of the year if i get it done in time, or sell it and think about a new bike next year.

I'm working longer hours now, and commuting further, but earning twice as much, so i could probably afford a #4K bike next year.

...or buy 3 TRX's !!

I feel for you mate: its a difficult decision, and you've not had much luck in your short biking career, and you sound pi55ed off big time, but you've gotta do whats best for you, much as I hate to see a trx die or one of the trx family leave for pastures new.

Gonna concentrate on shoehorning an RS4 4.2 V8 into that VR6 instead, or whatever you're up to !!! 8)

or oil do ya deal on a 2000 TDM 850 enjun thats just sitting in me garage doin nuffin, it's the MKIIa version that has the better gearbox internals to the pre 99 versions but it prolly has different ratios to a t'rex ?? it's done 27,000 miles and i have owned it since it was 8,500 miles old, it does use oil though like most TDM's / TRX's (bout 1 litre every 1000 miles) but udder than that it's grand. if i don't sell it i'd like to eventually fit me TDM 900 barells/pistons to it and sling it into a XTZ 750 chassis !

Just a thought... I may be completely off with this one.... (I have next to no mechanical knowledge, particularly if the part isn't accessible from the outside of the engine! lol)

Can the crank be taken out and taken to someone to have a "new" crank manufactured?
I have this problem with the bike I've just bought (paid a pittance for it, and there are engines available reasonably locally for me so I'm not too concerned)... and a mate suggested getting a new crank made up, and that there are a number of places locally that specialise in this for the car industry and the it would be reasonably priced to do it.... I haven't got as far as making enquiries along that path yet, but wondered if anyone else had done it/considered it/aware of problems with it...?

Seems to me that if it's a part that goes regularly-ish then, surely there's someone making new ones, or who is able to make new ones... is just the crank affected, or would I have to look at new conrods??? (not sure that's right, sorry...)

Thanks for any help... still trawling the forum for more, so sorry if I've jumped the gun and this is answered elsewhere. :D

depends on the extent of the damage, where it is and how good your machinist is.
cranks can be undersized with accompaning oversized bearings.
i have even heard of holden bearings modified to suit, being just about the right size.
let your fingers do the walking.
oh, and use the search on the forum for others who have gone down this path.
cheers

OF COURSE, you can have a new crank made, it ain`t cheap for one offs though believe me!
Mass produced engines normally utilise cast and / or forged crankshafts, mainly to keep costs down. Journal / bearing faces get machined, as does overall length, threads, drillings etc.
Just to give you an idea of the costs involved see Arrow`s listing below, (albeit these are for car engines, but these are stock and not one offs):

When I blew an engine, I priced up having the crank reground and straightened and, by the time I factored in the cost of new shells, oil, gaskets etc it was cheaper to buy a new engine.

And that was without taking into account my time and costs associated with delivering and collecting parts etc.
