Ceramic liner?
I've been following a very long thread elsewhere where someone is doing the dongs danglies conversion of a S10 into something more closely resembling a YZE850.
One of the engine mods proposed is sending off the barrells to http://www.poeton.co.uk/ whi will apparently overbore the barrels and fit a ceramic liner. I note they also offer coatings for other engine components too to reduce friction and wear.
Anyone had any experience of doing the liners? The cost seems reasonable (£200) and if it cures the oil consumption issue like on the 900's it seems like it might be a worthy mod.

The oil consumption on the TRX is inherent by design flaw.
5v head + dry pump'd pressure sump. Changing to 4v heads, wetsump but relocated gearbox (bring it higher out of the oil) and splash lube it, few other tweaks, you can really cut down on the burning of oil.
Using a bore coat (such as nicosil, tinite, etc) it will lower oil NEEDS, not its burn rate. By lowering the oil pressure, you can do this, but you need to be fairly retarded to do this.. As the whole oil system will suffer.
Its possible to reduce oil burn rate by changing over your rings and oil retainer ring (the wavey one). Different shaped waves retain different ammounts of oil. So by using different brand of rings will alter the oil usage.
Piston design (skirt, oiler holes, etc) also plays quite a role in all this.
If you were really worried about how much oil you burn, do what the F1 boys do (and from what i heard once, one MotoGP team trialed). Pure ceramic bores and pistons. Indy cars have done it aswell for a while. They run zero clearance and only one piston ring (mainly for sealing purposes rather than oil scraping duties). Problem is you cant run the engine cold.. You artificially heat the engine and oil before you can even start it.
Just be thankful we dont have 2stroke's.. now THEY burn oil.

Can't bother much about a bit of oil consumption, as said, it's common. Also no oil consumption as well for some of us... (Max is one of them as I read )

mine does burn / consume oil, but it still goes 5,000km without topping it up. And thats service interval for me anyway. I guess its very hit and miss. weird.

Does anyone know if the newer tdm 900 suffers from the high oil consumption?
I neglected to check my oil enough and resulted in a seized inlet cam, that was nice.

From the sezure? I didnt check it, it happened a few years back. It didnt lock solid just kept spinning. I didnt notice it untill i took the top off to check the clearences. It runs fine now. you were very lucky then.
if the inlet cam seizes, which is not uncommon, it is not unusual for the inertia in the crank to keep the crank rotating, which strips teeth off the timing gear on the crank as the timing chain has stopped moving at the camshaft, until a piston meets some valves.
